ASCII approximations

From Wikipedia!

The US‐ASCII character set and other variants of ISO/IEC 646 contains 95 graphic characters. It is comparable with a (Latin script) typewriter and insufficient for a quality typography. But high availability and robustness of ASCII character encoding prompted computer users to invent ASCII substitutes for various glyphs.

However, these approximations are now gone as new Unicode character sets such as UTF‐8 are appeared. There are easy to type in keyboard. Ways to type non‐ASCII characters is Windows alt‐code, Mac Option key, or an (inter)national keyboard. Some characters are not available in any keyboards, so it required to copy‐paste characters; or create new keyboard layout with the characters using Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator (MSKLC) or KDWin, or use different keyboard layout.

Following ASCII characters are used to approximate:

Notes

[edit]
  • Some are found from some web‐site references.
  • Some characters may are rarely supported by fonts, and if not fonts installed, they will be shown as solid squares. As such, some Unicode fonts are added as HTML/CSS font faces.
  • Some approximations are found on ShapeCatcher, a web‐site to “draw” the non‐CJK Unicode characters and confuse the character/approximation(s).
  • Some characters are in boldface to distinguish between smart quotes, or characters, etc.
