Lua

Hi, I'm curious what Lua will be doing with this message? --MF-W 19:23, 8 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

MF-W: Hi :) In that edit summary, I was referring to the Module:Assemble multilingual message script, which allows someone to send a multilingual message to a bunch of wikis using MassMessage. It's a script similar to the one used to deliver Tech/News in different languages. There's some documentation at Newsletters/Translation, as well as in a blog post from earlier this year, and in my Wikimania talk (the link points to the part of video about the script). You can see the result at User:Keegan (WMF)/sandbox (with only the first few language codes). Hope that helps :) guillom (talk) 19:30, 8 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
I see. That module looks like a great idea, I guess sooner or later I will end up using it as well for some notification...! --MF-W 20:38, 8 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for your help!

Fixes on nl-wiki

Hi Guillaume, thanks for the fixes on nl-wiki; no-one reviewed my translation, and I didn't notice the mistake before the message was posted (probably because the error wasn't so noticeable here on meta...). Thanks again :) - Kthoelen (talk) 14:11, 20 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

Kthoelen: Hi; No problem! That's the least I could do since you spent time translating it :) Guillaume (WMF) (talk) 14:18, 20 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

TechNews

Hi, I'm one of TechNews translators. I've noticed that you update TechNews, but the 49th issue is not ready yet. Do you plan to make it, or should I address someone else? Kf8 (talk) 16:19, 30 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

Kf8: I'm sorry, I forgot to send a message to translators to let them know that I wasn't planning to publish an issue of Tech News this week. I'll send one now and I'll make sure to send a message beforehand in the future. Thank you for all your help with translations!

Help on ms.wikipedia

Hi. Based on the templates on en.wikipedia i tried to fix ms:Template:PD-self and when that did not work I tried to use a different version on ms:Template:GFDL-self. It seems that neither work as they should. Could you help? --MGA73 (talk) 10:26, 3 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hello MGA73. In addition to the markers, you need to add the licensetpl class to the wrapping table, like this. Let me know if you have any other questions. Thank you for helping with this :) Guillaume (WMF) (talk) 16:22, 5 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
Thank you! I think I fixed a few more templates on ms-wiki now.
I also fixed a template on no.wikipedia with these edits. It got the files out of the automatic category. But do you think it is a good solution? I think being an unfree file it should look like files uploaded under fair use. --MGA73 (talk) 21:16, 5 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
Per this blog post, I'm not sure. Guillaume (WMF) (talk) 21:47, 5 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
That was new to me :-) --MGA73 (talk) 20:06, 6 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

File metadata labs tool

Hi, Can you please have a look here? Thanks! -- M\A 19:08, 5 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

Done, sorry for missing this! Guillaume (WMF) (talk) 21:47, 5 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
Hi. No problem. I wonder if you could make the fields of this table sortable, so I can look for files with specific problems. Best regards. -- M\A 10:52, 8 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

Next Tech-news

Hello! I'm wondering if you would be willing to mention Requests for comment/Abandoned Labs tools in the next tech news as I think that will be one of the best ways to get participation from people interested in the topic. I plan on sending out a couple notices to a couple of the mailing lists today as well on the topic. Thanks and I look forward to feedback! - {{U|Technical 13}} (etc) 15:59, 12 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

Technical 13: Sure, I'll be glad to include it. In the future, feel free to be bold and add items to the next edition yourself :) Guillaume (WMF) (talk) 17:33, 12 February 2015 (UTC)Reply
I was afraid, Tech news prepared by tech ambassadors seems intimidating since I'm not a tech ambassador, whatever that is. :p - {{U|Technical 13}} (etc) 17:39, 12 February 2015 (UTC)Reply
"If you've ever reported a bug, commented on a new feature or explained how the software works to another Wikimedian, you're already a tech ambassador." :) Guillaume (WMF) (talk) 21:07, 12 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

Template loop detected: Template:Tech header/en

Hello, are you interested of fixing those pages like Tech/News/2013/45 where is a text: "Template loop detected: Template:Tech header/en"? I already did it here, just need to remove the Translatable template| part and mark for translation. It would be much faster without the translation extensions' need for dummy edits. --Stryn (talk) 17:22, 13 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

Self-fulfilling prophecy

Hi, this removal of a future change torpedoes my attempt to create a self-fulfilling prophecy, are you actually unhappy with the future state of the art? –Be..anyone (talk) 03:03, 27 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hi. I'm not unhappy with the future situation; I very much look forward to it. However I don't think there's much value in pointing people to a currently empty or mostly-empty page. Guillaume (WMF) (talk) 15:31, 9 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

File metadata cleanup drive

Merci Weft (talk) 18:50, 9 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Guillaume (WMF) (talk) 18:59, 9 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Signpost---Tech report

We started republishing the tech report sporadically a while ago, because it covers a pretty huge gap in our coverage—tech—that is one of the "big three" sections but hasn't been edited regularly since Jarry1250 left ages ago. We were thinking of solidifying the schedule for this a bit and doing it once a month at the end of the month—any suggestions, organization-wise? ResMar 22:22, 4 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

Resident Mario: I don't have any specific suggestions. If it helps, our weekly schedule is pretty consistent; The newsletter is always finished by Saturday, and in most cases by Friday. It's sent to subscribers on Monday afternoon UTC. Let me know if you have any questions or if I can do anything to help. Guillaume (WMF) (talk) 22:47, 4 May 2015 (UTC)Reply
Well, the question is one of organization, I think. One way to do it would be to just have the formatting as it is in the weekly reports, and copy-paste it over. But I think that's a poor approach, since over the course of five weeks they really add up. I don't this is a great way of doing it.
A better way would be to collate all of the news related to particular topics that has occurred over the course of the month under specific sections. "VisualEditor", for instance, or "Mediawiki". This would be much more readable, but bumps into the problem of the fact that we no longer have anyone on the staff with enough tech spec to do that well.
Maybe you can help us on that front? The research newsletter is already cross-published as a part of the Signpost, this could be too. ResMar 03:51, 5 May 2015 (UTC)Reply
Resident Mario: Unfortunately, I can barely keep up with putting together the weekly newsletter as it is. I'm the only one working on it, and it's a legacy responsibility from my previous position (actually, with the latest re-org, it's a responsibility carried over from two positions ago) so I can't commit to spending time re-formatting the content for inclusion in the Signpost.
However, in a few weeks, the Community engagement team is going to take over Tech News. They'll be consolidating the different newsletters and other publications into a more consistent process, and I think they would be open to a collaboration with the Signpost. I'll bring this up when we meet to discuss the transition, and I can advise them to reach out to you then, if that makes sense. Guillaume (WMF) (talk) 15:56, 5 May 2015 (UTC)Reply
I am very happy to hear that! There are a lot of newsletters floating around which are each read only by the small body of interested parties especially invested in what they cover: tech news, visual editor report, edu report...just cataloging all of them took me quite some time. It is good to hear that some sort of order will be instituted among them. I hope also that eventually subscriptions will be reworked so that you can subscribe via Echo notifications instead of directly via talk-page delivery, for instance, and for a lot of other things that I hope will be in the pipeline now that SUL is a done deal. Thanks for the heads up! ResMar 19:30, 5 May 2015 (UTC)Reply
Resident Mario: Regarding that last point (usability improvements): You will probably also like to know (if you don't already) that a GSoC student is working on a "Newsletter" extension for MediaWiki that should make the subscription process much more intuitive, and generally make newsletters a lot more enjoyable for both their authors and their readers :) (I found out about it today and it's making me very happy.) Ooooh. Looks nice! ResMar 23:56, 5 May 2015 (UTC)Reply
