Revision as of 18:48, 19 May 2022

You're invited to join the North Carolina Wikipedians for Wiki Pix NC '22 — our first-ever crowd-sourced photo campaign. During the month from May 22 to June 22, we'll take photos highlighting sites of natural, cultural, and historical interest in North Carolina and add them to the Wikimedia Commons. All are welcome — no experience with Wikimedia is required. Read on to learn more and join the campaign!

Essential information

You can upload photographs of natural sites ...
... plants and animals ...
... Historical sites ...
... cultural sites ...
... or anything that catches your eye!
What: A collaborative photography event hosted by North Carolina Wikipedians
Where: all across North Carolina, United States.
When: May 22 to June 22, 2022
Why: Become part of the largest free media repository and the most popular encyclopedia in the world. Increase representation of North Carolina’s history, culture, and natural beauty in the Wikimedia Commons and in Wikipedia articles.

What is the Wikimedia Commons?

Wikimedia Commons is the largest repository of free-to-use images in the world. It's home to more than 60 million pictures, including the photos and illustrations you see in Wikipedia articles. Without photographers uploading their work to Wikimedia Commons, Wikipedia would just be text! If you take a high quality photo during this event, it could end up illustrating a Wikipedia article and being seen by millions of people.

Who Are the North Carolina Wikipedians?

North Carolina Wikipedians is a local group of Wikipedia users promoting the free knowledge ecosystem in North Carolina. Our group runs events with the people and institutions of North Carolina to help everyone contribute to projects like Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons.

To learn more about us and to find future free events, check out our Wikimedia User Group page and our Events page

How to Participate

  1. Take a photo (or many photos!) of natural, cultural, or historical sites in North Carolina – places like parks, historic sites, and botanical gardens.
  2. Create a Wikimedia account
    1. If you don't already have an account, you'll be prompted to create one. This page explains how to set up your account: Why create an account?. It’s free and very easy to do!
  3. Upload your photo to Wikimedia Commons
    1. Upload photos here

Who can participate?

Anyone! This competition invites brand new and experienced photographers, nature lovers, and North Carolina history fans to take pictures and upload them to Wikimedia Commons.

Guidelines and Best Practices

Remember that any photographs uploaded to the Commons -- including photographs of identifiable people -- can be reused for commercial purposes without your consent.
  • With this campaign, we’re hoping to increase representation of lesser-known natural, cultural, and historic sites across the state. Great photos will highlight what makes North Carolina unique and inspiring – bonus points for interesting composition, rare wildlife, and intriguing lighting.
  • Upload your photos to Wikimedia Commons during the event period, May 22 to June 22, 2022
    • Photos taken before the event period are allowed. If you have an excellent picture from a North Carolina site taken in the past, you're welcome to upload that, too.
  • If you've previously published the photo (for example, posting to social media), you may be contacted to complete an additional step to make sure you're the same person who published it elsewhere.

In-person events

We won’t be hosting in-person events this year, but may have related in-person events in the future. If you’d like to find out about what we’re planning, sign up for our User Group’s listserv.

Got questions?

If you have questions about the event, please leave a message on the discussion page (note that your comments will be public!)
