German U-boat attacks in 1916 were happening often. U-boats were German submarines; a submarine is an underwater boat. A submarine was seen as a weapon of little importance. During World War 1, U-boat attacks on big ships brought Great Britain to almost losing the war. These illegal attacks created a big risk for everyone. A British boat called the Lusitania had 159 Americans on it. German submarines looked out for all British ships. They shot a torpedo at the Lusitania. A torpedo is a self-propelled underwater missile designed to be fired from a ship or submarine. The sinking of this ship raised bad feelings between the United States and Germany. Germany though, made a war-zone around British islands and they would sink enemy ships. German U-boats sank every boat that they could see.
