This page was used by users to ask a bureaucrat to change their username for them until 15th September 2014, when bureaucrats lost their rights to rename users locally. A historic log of those actions can be found here. Requests for renaming accounts globally are now handled on the page Steward requests/Username changes on Meta-Wiki. Please proceed to that page for requesting a global rename. Alternatively, you may use this special page to request a rename.

Taking over an account

Notes

*The account you want to usurp (take over) should have no changes or major log entries to qualify for usurpation (though rare exceptions are made in some circumstances).

• Please do not request usurpation of another account if your own user account is less than several months old, or not used often. In order to ensure that usurped usernames be put to good use, we prefer only to accept requests from reasonably well-established users.
• Because of the unified login facility, you should check to ensure that your desired name is not already used on other Wikimedia projects, as this may prevent your request from being processed (see Wikipedia:Handling SUL conflicts for more details).
• The day of renaming depends on the day of notification. If you delay in placing the notification, there will be a delay in the processing of your request. For the sake of simplicity and swiftness of usurpation, notify your target immediately after placing a request.

• Log in to your present account if the request involves a rename. Requests filed by IPs are assumed to be for SUL purposes (since IPs cannot be renamed).
• Leave a message on the talk page of the target account (this template will do the trick: {{subst:usurpr}}) notifying the user of your request.

  Please do not e-mail the target account yourself. If this becomes necessary, a bureaucrat or clerk will do so.

Add your request to this section if you are asking for a name which already exists. Note: the name you want to take over must have no edits, and must be more than six months old.
