How do i upload this image file format to Commons? Trade (talk) 19:33, 27 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Trade: Convert to an accepted file type (presumably a lossless one) and upload that. - Jmabel ! talk 01:55, 28 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
Any suggestions for method? Trade (talk) 02:10, 28 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Trade: Bring it into the graphics program of your choice (I use GIMP, but for this even Microsoft Paint will do, as of course will GraphicsMagic and ImageMagic from the command line). Save as a PNG. - Jmabel ! talk 16:32, 28 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Jmabel: Any png image will look fuzzy when scaled down (due to design decisions discussed in phab:T192744) or jaggy when scaled up.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 16:23, 29 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Jeff G.: So do we have a lossless format that will not have that problem? - Jmabel ! talk 17:32, 29 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
webp with lossless codec. Or jpeg with 99% quality setting. Or tiff with a lossless codec. Or the original format from gimp. C.Suthorn (@[email protected] - p7.ee/p) (talk) 18:31, 29 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
@C.Suthorn: Do any of those other format / codec combinations get automatically sharpened when thumbnailed for display on WMF wikis like jpeg does?   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 14:32, 6 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
As far as I know PNG is the only raster image file format (apart from GIF, but GIF is mainly used for animation and the total number of GIF files on commons is very low) that is assumed by wikimedia (developers) to contain "graphic" content, while all other raster formats are assumed to contain "foto" content and therefore are thumbnailed using jpeg and using scaling optimized for foto content? Updating files

edit

I'd like to know how I can update, i.e., replace a file previously uploadad.

Thank you Mrgarthholmes (talk) 21:25, 27 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Mrgarthholmes: Is this about a file you uploaded, or that someone else uploaded? - Jmabel ! talk 01:52, 28 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hi, it is a file that I originally uploaded. Mrgarthholmes (talk) 20:04, 4 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Mrgarthholmes: If you are replacing it with an improved version of the same image, absolutely. If anything else, it should be uploaded under a distinct filename. - Jmabel ! talk 22:14, 4 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hello, this is the page of the file: File:The Crystal Sea - Lyrics.pdf - Wikimedia Commons but I cannot find a link to replace or upload a new version. Mrgarthholmes (talk) 02:51, 6 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Convenience link: File:The Crystal Sea - Lyrics.pdf.
@Mrgarthholmes: If you look below the "File History", you will see a link "Upload a new version of this file". - Jmabel ! talk 04:46, 6 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Mrgarthholmes: Why are you uploading images in pdf format? Where did you get them? Where are the videos that the lyrics are from? Did the permission you provided in Ticket:2019112410000051 cover overwrites?   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 10:55, 6 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
I wrote the lyrics, for the song "The Crystal Sea", which have now change, hence why I wish to update the file. I use .pdf files on my website, however the text was formatted as a Tramscroll, which I no longer use. Mrgarthholmes (talk) 09:30, 9 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Problem with a pdf file

edit

Hi. I recently uploaded File:National Geographic, April 1921, Persia.pdf, but when I want to use CropTool to extract more files, the pages are not loaded. Also, the thumbnail of the pdf file is not shown and in the File history section, Dimensions of the file is "0 × 0". What's the problem? HeminKurdistan (talk) 04:36, 2 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

@HeminKurdistan: I can't speak to the thumbnail issue, but CropTool has had all sorts of problems lately. It looks like someone may finally be taking it over.
You'd do better to report this at Commons talk:CropTool, and possibly to file a phabricator report. - Jmabel ! talk 04:46, 2 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Maybe it's Commons:Village_pump/Technical#Problems_with_PDF_Preview. Enhancing999 (talk) 13:46, 2 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
HeminKurdistan: Go to the archive.org source page as indicated in the file. Then scroll down on the right side to find the "SINGLE PAGE PROCESSED JP2 ZIP" file. Having downloaded that, find the page you want and, because it is is JP2000 format that cannot be uploaded to here, save a copy of that page as a jpg or png file. Preferably do any cropping before saving. No need to try and extract images from a pdf for most archive.org material as then tend to give crappy images made from a lower quality pdf. The JP2000 files are of a much higher quality. Here are a couple of files I uploaded by this method and they often replace a crappy image, such as File:The History of Little Henry and His Bearer (1826).jpg, File:S 156 Abb 107 Telephonzentrale im IX. Bezirke, Berggasse.jpg and File:Dublin and Drogheda Railway map 1855.jpg. Is this useful for you? Ww2censor (talk) 15:59, 2 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Ww2censor. Thanks, that's a really useful tip. The good point of working with CropTool was that it uploaded files automatically. HeminKurdistan (talk) 05:10, 7 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Delete a redirect page?

edit

Hi, yesterday I uploaded a file under an incorrect title, now kindly corrected by a relevant person following a "rename request" - old/incorrect name was at File:St Mary's College-1.jpg, new one is at File:St Mary's Convent-1.jpg. Currently this file is used only on a single Wikipedia page (at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lismore,_New_South_Wales) plus my own user page. I note that as part of the rename process, either the renamer or the software has created a redirect page on Commons from the old filename to the new one, see https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:St_Mary%27s_College-1.jpg&redirect=no ... I am thinking that this is really just "noise" now since the usage under the original name was so brief, and perhaps serves no useful purpose in the longer term, so am wondering whether it should or could simply be deleted... also who can do this if it is indeed sensible.... Thanks in advance, Tony Rees Tony 1212 (talk) 19:45, 2 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

File redirects should almost never be deleted. However, if there is a recently uploaded file with an obvious error in the file name, some flexibility is of course permitted. --Geohakkeri (talk) 11:04, 3 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Geohakkeri So If I interpret this as permitting a deletion in the present case, can I do it, or does it need to be done by an admin? (not sure what is the process here...) Tony 1212 (talk) 18:24, 3 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
You can tag the redirect page with {{SD|G2}} if you want it deleted. --Geohakkeri (talk) 18:28, 3 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks @Geohakkeri, have done so just now. Regards Tony Tony 1212 (talk) 19:09, 3 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
It has been removed, so the system works, thanks. Tony 1212 (talk) 10:45, 6 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

I was trying to upload several photos related to the Super Nintendo World in Universal Studios Hollywood. These photos were taken last year, but I need help uploading them. There are questions about what it depicts in this photo, like the usage of non-free characters in this area. There are some photos that I will upload, so is it OK to upload the following:

  • Any image containing the Mario icon only on objects (like the coin block)?
  • Interiors of rides and attractions (including photos taken during the ride and the line queue)?
  • Images of vehicles inside the attraction?

I don't know if these photos are safe to upload to Wikimedia Commons. I usually avoid copyrighted objects on displays or blur them in order to upload to Wikimedia Commons. Evan0512 (talk) 23:49, 4 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

See COM:De minimis for guidelines on the inclusion of copyrighted elements in a photo. Buildings are OK per COM:FOP USA but sculpture, artwork, characters would follow the de minimis guidelines. Rides seem to me like a grey area. Consigned (talk) 23:26, 11 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

What is the policy on porn

edit

I am someone who is actively trying to avoid porn sites but want to learn about sexuality in a safe way I am an adult so graphic content is fine with me I am just trying to avoid material that is explicit porn intended specifically to arouse sexual feelings non porn graphic sexual material is different i understand that thank you 172.59.72.132 03:13, 6 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Commons really has no "policy on porn" as such. Pornography is a widespread human activity, and we certainly consider coverage of it within our scope, as is coverage of other aspects of human sexuality. Policy COM:Nudity is basically about trying to strike a reasonable balance in this area; basically, our requirements for images around nudity and sexuality are a bit more stringent than in other areas, but not dramatically different.
I would say that if you are looking for material about sexuality that generally avoids tipping over into pornography, a collection of images isn't the best place to start. You'd do better to go to the English-language Wikipedia and start from en:Category:Human sexuality. Outside of Wikimedia Foundation projects, https://www.scarleteen.com, although aimed primarily at teens, is an absolutely excellent educational site on human sexuality that tries very hard to avoid being pornographic. The bulk of the site is liable to be as useful to an adult as to the teens who are seen as its primary audience. - Jmabel ! talk 04:59, 6 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank for the quick response and I appreciate the answer just to clarify so looking at wiki policy sexual content on wiki commons has to serve a purpose and can’t be for sexual arousal which is what porn is
i sincerely apologize about all the questions and thanks again 172.59.72.132 03:17, 7 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
And sorry meant to clarify what mean by avoiding porn is viewing sexually explicit material that’s sole purpose is sexual arousal and from reading wiki commons just now it sound like you don’t allow sexual content that is porn in nature and that it has to have a educational purpose even if it sexualy graphic
sorry a lot have questions lol
i have ocd that causes me to question things and porn sites I stay away from 172.59.72.132 03:59, 7 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

File:BoulevardCamajuani.JPG was uploaded by Lezumbalaberenjena at English Wikipedia, which is also on Flickr, and he uploaded the same image 2 months before, here, but without the copyright that can be used on commons, is it possible for the file to possibly stay with him just saying we have permission to use it, him changing the copyright on Flickr, or another way for the file to stay on commons? Move option missing

edit

I wanted to request renaming of File:Masaka referal Hospital.jpg, but there is no "Move" option under the "More" tab. Is this a temporary glitch? or has the method of requesting renaming changed? - Arjayay (talk) 10:58, 7 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Arjayay: I've noticed something similar as a filemover: the "Move and Replace" option has turned back into "Move". I think the "RenameLink" gadget is broken. Looking at Special:Gadgets this might be related to the warning "The following right does not exist: writeapi". That warning appears against RotateLink, and that gadget isn't working either. --bjh21 (talk) 11:05, 7 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Arjayay I checked and it seems absent on files, but strangely not absent on categories. Immanuelle ❤️💚💙 (please tag me) 16:17, 7 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Immanuelle: That's because you can directly rename categories, but not files (because you're not a filemover). So MediaWiki gives you a "Move" link for categories but not files. Usually, the RenameLink gadget would add a "Move" link for files that makes it easy for you to add the {{Rename}} template, but RenameLink got broken by a MediaWiki update and needs a bit of administrator attention. --bjh21 (talk) 16:41, 7 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
This has now been corrected. CptViraj has removed the mentions of writeapi from the gadget definitions and the various gadgets are back for me at least. --bjh21 (talk) 20:44, 7 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks allI hav now been able to request the renaming of Masaka referal Hospital - Arjayay (talk) 14:41, 8 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

How would I bring attention to a deletion request?

edit

In the sea of deletion requests, it seems somewhat likely that you may not get a response for days, weeks or possibly even months. You may have to try to actively bring attention, and point to your own deletion request.

How would I do that, apart from the Discord server? (I don't want to go there because I don't go to the Discord server basically ever, so I would seem only self-serving by going there for this) Kxeon (talk) 20:22, 7 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

We have a serious backlog in deletion requests. More admins and experienced users working on them would be good. Is there some particular reason some deletion request is urgent and needs speedy attention? If it's a copyright violation, it can be tagged {{Copyvio}}. -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 20:34, 7 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Is this about Commons:Deletion requests/File:Emblem of Ambazonia.svg or something else? If that, it's been open less than a week, so it is not even eligible to be closed unless there were a clear, strong consensus, which there isn't. It doesn't offhand look to me like a file of much importance, whether it ends up kept (unlikely) or deleted. - Jmabel ! talk 03:40, 8 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Permission to overwrite files uploaded from my old account.

edit

Hi, until 2020 I edited and uploaded from User:The-, but I lost the login to my old account and was unable to recover it, so had to set up a new account. This means I am now unable to upload new versions of images I uploaded with my old account, without going through the "request permission" page. I am planning on making a series of updates to a group of dozens of images I uploaded with my old account, and it will be very laborious to go through the requesting permission page for every single one of these images. I don't know if it is within the technical capabilities of the Commons permission system, but if it is, would it be possible to grant my new account blanket, indefinite permission to modify all images uploaded by User:The-, since we are the same person? Offa29 (talk) 01:29, 8 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Why should we keep unused empty categories, instead of deleting them?

edit

As far as I know, there are two extremely experienced registered users and they pointed out a problem about a user tagging the {{Empty page}} template to existing categories that are empty. I just browsed a bit and easily found many empty categories, but I can't see any sense of keeping them, so I'm wondering what good does it do us to not clean up useless categories or what are the benefits to Commons? We can assume the most extreme case: If empty categories to grow and we choose to sit (or say, nobody to clean up them), what will be the consequences for Commons?--125.230.83.100 08:44, 8 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

The template isn't just for any empty category, just for some.
There isn't really a problem in creating an empty "Joe Biden in 2015" if already have categories for the other years in the decade. Enhancing999 (talk) 09:04, 8 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Most empty categories should be deleted, but I can think of at least two cases where they shouldn't be. One, as suggested by Enhancing999's remarks, is the rare empty category that forms part of a natural series or set where all or almost all of the others are populated. The other is a category that is clearly about to be used. For example if someone were to create a category for each day of a week-long conference a few days before it started, it would be silly to delete any empty categories there until at least few days after the conference is over. For a slightly less obvious example, for almost any category created in the last few days by an experienced user, we assume they plan to use the category in the near future if they haven't already. - Jmabel ! talk 20:06, 8 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for your reply. 60.106.67.137 23:11, 10 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Ajaywrite: you are indeed a bit confused. This appears to be a copyrighted image for which no free license exists, so it doesn't belong on Commons unless the copyright-holder, presumably the photographer, grants such a license. Most of what is on the Internet (over 95%) is copyrighted material for which no free license is offered. You should not upload anything to Commons unless either (1) it is entirely your own work, and you are granting a license, (2) a specific free license is available, or (3) it is in the {{Public domain}} both in its home country and in the United States. - Jmabel ! talk 05:42, 9 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

How to upload free to use images without a clear license

edit

The City of Vancouver archive contains a lot of images, and has ownership over a lot of the images. I'd like to upload some of these, such as this image of the S.S. Smokwa for use on English Wikipedia. However, there isn't a clear license. According to the city's website, in section 3.3, that for items owned by the city "the Archives grants the patron a non-exclusive license to use the reproductions without restriction as to the nature or purpose of the use." without actually specifying the details of said license, though other sections such as 3.7 make it seemingly analogous to a CC BY license.

So when uploading this, and other images owned by the city, to wikimedia commons, how do I handle the license? Emma0mb (talk) 20:54, 9 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Emma0mb: You could use {{Attribution only license}}, but it might be worth creating a specific template for that site that mentions these specific terms from their website. - Jmabel ! talk 22:46, 9 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
What would the best way to go about making a template be? Should I just copy the attribution only license, and what should it include? Emma0mb (talk) 22:57, 9 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Emma0mb: There is a template for Vancouver Archives "Source" that can be used like {{VAN|CVA 447-8211.2}}, and for copyright/license permission I would use {{Attribution only license |text=City of Vancouver Archives, AM1506-S3-3-: CVA 447-8211.2, Photograph by Walter E. Frost}}. A specific template for the latter would be handy if any template-makers are reading this, though the file's notes specifically say Photographs to be credited as follows: Photograph by Walter E. Frost so not sure if the same formatting would cover other photographers in the archives. BTW the City of Vancouver Archives terms of use do suggest that their donation process includes transfer of copyright for items labeled "Rights holder City of Vancouver" and as you point out they do allow free use. Selbstporträt zu Wikipedia-Artikel hinzufügen?

edit

Thomassischke (talk) 21:03, 9 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Thomassischke: Only the copyright-holder (Claudia Scherer, in this case) can grant a license; she could grant any license that Commons accepts. We usually recommend {{CC-BY-SA-4.0}} or {{CC-BY-4.0}}. Either she needs to take an account and upload it herself, or she needs to post it with an indication of license on a web page (e.g. public-facing social media account) clearly under her control, or she needs to go through the COM:VRT process.
Also, please when uploading use a meaningful filename (e.g. "Claudia Scherer, 2024.jpg"), not an arbitrary string of letters and numbers. - Jmabel ! talk 22:53, 9 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Gauhar2209: I have no idea what you mean here by "an after" but, no, most images on social networks are copyrighted and not free licensed. Using a module

I would like to use data from Module:WL data in another page on Commons. What should I add behind {{#invoke:WL data| to retrieve a specific time for project W, country X, year Y and start/end Z? Romaine (talk) 10:50, 10 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

How to add extra buttons to the toolbar above the edit field when replying?

edit

When I type this message on the help desk (or elsewhere), above the edit field is a limited list of buttons (bold, italic, underlined, link, special characters, @). The ones I often use however aren't there (like nowiki, code) and I want to add them myself trough my .js. Does anyone have an example of (at least 2) added extra buttons to this toolbar? Romaine (talk) 10:56, 10 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hmm... Code and nowiki are there normally, so the question might be how were they removed for you. -- Asclepias (talk) 13:51, 10 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
I have now found the code one, where do you see the nowiki? But the main question remains, above the edit field when editing a page I have added various buttons. I like to add those too above the reply field. Romaine (talk) 14:00, 10 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
In the "edittools" group of buttons. Oh, do you mean that you want to have only those two buttons, but you want to hide all the others? You may obtain more suggestions at Commons:Village pump/Technical. -- Asclepias (talk) 14:07, 10 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
When I reply here, I use the reply function. With that function an edit field appears in the page. Above that edit field are some buttons, but I want to add some more. (The same thing I did above the edit field when normally editing a page.) I can't write from scratch new code, but if I have a good example, I can modify it for my own use. Romaine (talk) 14:13, 10 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Yes, the code and nowiki buttons, and many others, are already there, unless something was disabled in your preferences or they were removed when personalising your interface. -- Asclepias (talk) 14:21, 10 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
If I try the reply function while being logged out, I see exactly the same. I will post something in the technical village pump. Romaine (talk) 14:39, 10 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
I guess what I'm trying to say is that it may be more simple to find, maybe in your user preferences, how to activate the full default set of buttons above your edit field, than to write code in your js page to arrive at the same result, unless you want a personalised set of buttons to show only a few of the available buttons. -- Asclepias (talk) 14:41, 10 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
As I already tried to indicate, I have the default set and I wish to add an extra personalised set of buttons. Romaine (talk) 14:43, 10 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Ok, then the mystery remains. -- Asclepias (talk) 14:47, 10 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Wrong name of a category

this page Category:Udi Harpaz

the name of the person is Ori Harpaz (not Uri) he is a very famous singer in Israel so this shoul be fixed please I would also like to offer more information for the page - I can write it and edit it myself.

Thank You! Ilana Ilanabe (talk) 16:39, 10 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Ilanabe: Aren't they two different persons? Apparently, this category was created for the composer/conductor, Udi, although there are currently no files of this person in this category. See his official website [1]. See also the articles about Udi on the Wikipedias. You can create a separate category for the guitarist/singer, Ori, and transfer his photos there. Notifying Geagea. -- Asclepias (talk) 17:18, 10 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Also, are you Moshik Brin? If not, you will need a VRT permission for File:אורי הרפז וקובי פז.jpg. -- Asclepias (talk) 17:38, 10 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
There were two pages on Wikidata. A first page, Q2473089, was created in January 2013 apparently in connection with the German-language Wikipedia article about the conductor Udi. In May 2015, someone mixed into it a few things about the singer Ori, although the information on the page remained mostly about the conductor Udi. A second page, Q25487962, was created in July 2016, with very little information, apparently in connection with the Hebrew-language Wikipedia article about the singer Ori. Soon after that, in November 2016, someone copied the contents of the existing page Q2473089 into the newly created page Q25487962 and turned Q2473089 into a redirection to Q25487962. So, now, the single page Q25487962 is still mostly about the conductor Udi, with the information about him inherited from Q2473089, plus more information about him added since 2016, but the page has a title and a photo about the singer Ori. We can leave to the Wikidata people to look into that. But if they are two distinct persons, we should probably keep them distinct on Commons. -- Asclepias (talk) 18:37, 10 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Asclepias, thanks for notifying.
They are two people. The difference in Hebrew is only one letter "ר"/"ד".
Ori Harpaz (אורי הרפז) born in Merhavia 15-06-1952 - Ori Harpaz (Q128803861) created new

Mass category maintenance, and merging files

edit

An American library has uploaded documents with over 100 pages as separate .jpg files, instead of something more sensible like .pdf or .tiff
Example of one booklet of statistics that should all be one file: https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?limit=500&offset=0&profile=default&search=35723ae1da43659e990b46ea4df41e19&title=Special:Search&ns0=1&ns6=1&ns12=1&ns14=1&ns100=1&ns106=1
Can we merge this, with a bot or something?
Alternatively, is there a way to easily mass-categorise based on search results? Or based on a query like "where file is in category_x and not in category_y, add category_z [and maybe some more category operations]"? Thank you. Komonzia (talk) 00:59, 11 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

There's lots of this, usually via DPLA, because that is apparently how DPLA store these. User:Dominic may have some thoughts here.
For some of documents (e.g. a highly visual magazine or catalog, or the two sides of a postcard) the JPEGs are probably better than a PDF, but I completely agree that most long documents are better as PDFs. Still, I am much happier to be handling the material in Category:Helix (newspaper) as JPEGs than as PDFs, but that is because it really is worth curating page-by-page; e.g. it's given us pretty much all of our content for Category:Split-fount inking. - Jmabel ! talk 04:18, 11 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Looking at his user page, Dominic seems very involved. So assuming there is a good reason separate JPEGs were chosen: One way forward we've not mentioned yet, I guess, is to add each of the files exported (using the hexadecimal identifier like 35723ae1da43659e990b46ea4df41e19 in my example) to its own category. I wanted to add the document in my example to the Net migration category. If all the files of that document were in one category, then we could add just the category as a subcategory, instead. I could do that with a script, just never done it before. If a script or bot already exists for that activity, it would be cool. Komonzia (talk) 18:41, 11 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Komonzia: The semi-automated Cat-a-lot is very good for this sort of thing. VisualFileChange can also be useful if you are more comfortable with that. Either can work on a search result. - Jmabel ! talk 02:28, 12 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I am interested in potentially uploading some historic Australian photographs, some published e.g. on postcards, some apparently unpublished, author unknown. They are mostly from the late 1890s into the early 1900s. I am a little confused as to which copyright situations apply here. At first I thought https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Template:PD-old-assumed would be applicable, for anything dating from 1903 and earlier. However I also found this: https://www.copyright.org.au/browse/book/ACC-Duration-of-Copyright-INFO023 (published 2024) which states:

"with effect from 1 January 2005, the duration of copyright for all published works including photographs was extended and made consistent – that is, life of the author/creator plus 70 years after the calendar year in which they died. See our fact sheet, Photography & Copyright. Due to changes to the copyright duration rules in 2005, copyright has already expired: • in a literary, dramatic, musical or artistic work (other than a photograph) if it was published before 1 January 1955 and the creator also died before then • in a photograph, if it was made before 1 January 1955."

This seems to say, on one hand that copyright in (Australian) photographs is, life of the author/creator plus 70 years after the calendar year in which they died, and on the other, that all photographs taken before 1955 are out of copyright (these 2 statements seem to be a bit contradictory).

In any case, can you suggest whether I can legitimately upload copies of Australian photographs I do not own, but which either (1) pre-date 1904 (120-year rule), or (2) pre-date 1955 (per statement above), and if so, which licence attributions should be used? Thanks in advance - Tony Rees, Australia Tony 1212 (talk) 20:17, 11 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

OK, found my answer here: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Copyright_rules_by_territory/Australia ... looks like I can just use "PD-Australia" for photographs taken prior to 1955. Cheers - Tony Tony 1212 (talk) 22:08, 11 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
I would appreciate some guidance regarding the appropriate PD-US tags that should also be used, though... Tony 1212 (talk) 22:30, 11 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Anything published anywhere before 1929 can use {{PD-US-expired}}. - Jmabel ! talk 02:31, 12 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks... would that also apply to unpublished items as well? In this case historic photos from private collections, later donated to museums... maybe never formally published. Tony 1212 (talk) 03:54, 12 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Jmabel From https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Hirtle_chart, I see that for "never published, never registered" works, PD-US-unpublished can be used for works without a known author, for works created before 1904 (i.e. 120 years before the current year). So I am thinking that unattributed, unpublished works (from Australia in the present instance) from 1904 onwards cannot be uploaded to Commons since they lack an appropriate tag for the US?? Just need to know what my cut-off date is here (some photos of interest may be before, some after that date). Regards Tony Tony 1212 (talk) 18:52, 12 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Sorry, didn't notice these were not all published. Yes, 120 year for unpublished, anonymous. - Jmabel ! talk 18:56, 12 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
OK, thanks @Jmabel, I think all is clear now. A bit of a pain that PD in Australia cannot automatically extend to elsewhere in the world, though! Regards Tony Tony 1212 (talk) 19:26, 12 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

How to upload photos from Russian Wikimedia Commons to English Wikipedia?

edit

Hello! This is probably a ridiculous question, but I really want to upload a photo of Maxim Lazovsky to English Wikipedia, but I have never uploaded a photo before from Wikimedia Commons onto Wikipedia. Can you guide me in simple steps, such as for a new Wikipedian?

Any help would be appreciated

-Ramekin99 Ramekin99 (talk) 23:56, 11 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Ramekin99: Why would you want to upload from Commons to en-wiki? Any image on Commons can be used on en-wiki exactly as if it had been uploaded to en-wiki. - Jmabel ! talk 02:33, 12 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Oh, wait: your header for this section says "Russian Wikimedia Commons". Could you give a URL of what you are talking about? As far as I know there is no such thing, just the Wikimedia Commons you are on, which is a multilingual project. - Jmabel ! talk 02:35, 12 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Ramekin99: Do you want to use the Russian Wikipedia file Maxim Lazovsky.jpg on his English Wikipedia article?
If so, you would download that file and upload it to English Wikipedia as a non-free file if you believe it meets the image criteria for fair use.
(If you're talking about some other file that has a Commons-eligible license or is in the public domain, then you would upload that file to Wikimedia Commons. To be clear, "fair use" is not a Commons-eligible license). "free use" is not a Commons-eligible license
After you've uploaded the relevant file, you would add the image to the English Wikipedia article Maxim Lazovsky by adding the code [[File:name of the photo|thumb|Caption text]] in.
Pinging @Jmabel, in case I've misstated anything. Lovelano (talk) 20:18, 13 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Would it be possible to make the background of File:Yogo2783_Close_crop.JPG transparant? It is used as an icon and the others all have transparent backgrounds which looks better in dark mode. Thanks a lot! Polygnotus (talk) 06:43, 12 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Strictly speaking, a JPEG cannot have transparency, as it doesn't have an alpha channel to store this information. The only way to make this graphic have a transparency is to embed it in another format that can have transparency, such as PNG or TIFF (or even SVG!) and then remove the background. You can add {{Opaque}} to the file to request a transparent background. —Justin (koavf)TCM 07:24, 12 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. OK, that means it is time for me to go to sleep because I am talking nonsense. Polygnotus (talk) 09:15, 12 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
It's hardly nonsense: your request makes complete sense, it's just that the file format doesn't allow for it, unlike almost all other common image formats. Even GIFs have transparency. —Justin (koavf)TCM 19:15, 12 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Is this album cover PD?

edit

The basic cover to this album is certainly {{PD-shape}} because it's just a couple of lines and a ring on a plain background, but there is some slight blurring that makes me wonder if this is enough to constitute a copyright-able image. I think not, since it seems like it's a pretty basic blur filter and not anything that involved the effort to make something distinct, but I want to run it by others before I upload it here. —Justin (koavf)TCM 19:15, 12 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Shortly before I came to the Commons, I accidentally saw the article about “學甲維基小鎮” on Fecebook while browsing the search results pages. The name 學甲維基小鎮, I translated it as "WikiSyuejia" and I also created this category: Category:Images from WikiSyuejia. As far as I know, Lki5168 and Linbobshow are a contributor to WikiSyuejia, especially the former, has written many articles for Syuejia's schools, settlements, and temples and he also has uploaded images to zhwiki (Chinese Wikipedia). But what is odd is that their images were transferred from zhwiki by other users, this shows they never came here (Commons Wikimedia) to upload. More interestingly, Lki5168 said he was busy, and the next moment he said he unfamiliar with Commons. It almost sounds like he is looking for a reason to refuse a good suggestion because he can find time from his busy schedule to learn Commons way and how to upload, like the Commons's interface and the upload steps. According to Wcam, the most pressing problem facing zhwiki is that they don't have extra manpower to help his images transfer to Commons (which it means we need to wait several months, even years) unless he learns to upload on his own. So, how can we help resolve this problem in a way that is good for zhwiki and good for Commons?--125.230.84.235 08:15, 13 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Apparently, the links on the page were not adjusted accordingly. For example, if you take the first link and you modify it with the other page name, you get to the page Архів:ДАХмО/Р-6193/1 instead of getting to a currently non-existent page Архів:ДАХмО/Р-6193/1. edit

Hello! I uploaded   in mid 2023, and it was working fine until around three months ago, when it suddenly started to stop viewing for some reason. When I try to open the SVG file, it views normally; but when I try to view the PNG version, it doesn't open, and the following error appears:

Request from (IP Address) via cp6006 cp6006, Varnish XID 857754359
Upstream caches: cp6006 int
Error: 429, Too Many Requests at Wed, 14 Aug 2024 12:37:56 GMT

Attempting to use this image on an article would cause it to not view properly, as in the following articles, for example: 2024 PSA Men's World Squash Championship and 2023–24 Egyptian Premier League.

I've previously posted this issue here last June but didn't get any response. I've tried several solutions, like re-uploading the file, but it didn't make any difference. Does anyone know a solution for this issue? Thanks in advance! Ben5218 (talk) 12:49, 14 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

I am the author

edit

The site rejected my submission. I am the author and the bio appears on the website 2B A RISING STAR regarding the creator, Robert Kenneth. Is it rejected because I just joined? Please clarify SherylDolley (talk) 20:35, 14 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Yes, that’s what happened: in order to upload PDF files an account created more than four days ago is required. So please try again after a few days. --Geohakkeri (talk) 21:08, 14 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
That doesn't really make sense. Is it just because I am new? Is there a better format to save my Word Doc? It wouldn't accept any format. I can change it. I am the owner.
I have several clients I hope to post. I write bios for clients. I always search new clients on Wikipedia. It is an important site in my world. SherylDolley (talk) 23:22, 14 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

@SherylDolley: have you read COM:SCOPE? Please do. It sounds very likely that the file you are proposing to upload does not belong on Commons. Commons is not here to be used as a promotional tool.

If you are considering editing on the English-language Wikipedia, make sure to read their policy on disclosing conflicts of interest and especially en:Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure. en-wiki is way stricter than Commons about this sort of thing, and if you make paid contributions without disclosure, en-wiki will almost certainly block your account. - Jmabel ! talk 02:30, 15 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Image of Bill Cipher

edit

On the page of Bill cipher I want to upload a picture of him, but I can't find any copyright free images of him. So can I put an image of him from the Pure evil wiki/fandom?[2]https://pure-evil-villains.fandom.com/wiki/Bill_Cipher GIFfany3 (talk) 00:06, 15 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Help needed with 1900-images

edit

Hello! I create a Wiki-version of an encyclopaedia based on a book I transcribed and the images for which I scanned from an original copy of the book. Due to the scope of the image requirements (ca. 1900 images, 983.5 MB) I need some help concerning questions about meta data, categorization, file naming, and the upload process, as well. I put together (hopefully) all relevant information on my user page (User:CalRis25) and marked open questions in red. I tried to answer as many questions as possible based on the Help-pages, but could use some help with the rest. Due to the large number of images every error would propagate 1900 times. I would like to avoid that. You can answer here or on the Talk-page of my user page. Thank you in advance for your help. CalRis25 (talk) 12:47, 15 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Uploading SVG with unsafe CSS

edit

Hello! I wanted to upload this 2015 map with the downloadable SVG, but I was prevented from doing so by Special:Upload due to "unsafe CSS in the style element of uploaded SVG file". Is there a way to fix that? Currently, I've uploaded it as a PNG instead. Ed [talk] [OMT] 18:32, 15 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

I put the SVG through Inkscape to clean it up and then successfully uploaded it as File:Total alcohol consumption per capita - litres of pure alcohol - 2015.svg. Not sure if the Inkscape cleanup was a necessary step or if this is a permissions issue or if something else is going on. —CalendulaAsteraceae (talkcontribs) 19:17, 15 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Can I upload a 1926 newspaper ad?

edit

I have an ad, clipped form a newspaper, for a circus that folded in 1926. Can I upload it? Darneke (talk) 23:01, 15 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Depends where the newspaper was published, but very likely. If it was published in the US, you're good. Otherwise, check Commons:Copyright rules by territory; you need the ad to be in the public domain both in the US and in the source country. (By the by, you might get more input from copyright-knowledgeable users if you post questions at Commons:Village pump/Copyright.) —CalendulaAsteraceae (talkcontribs) 03:39, 16 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Darneke: If published anywhere in 1926, it is now public domain in the U.S., but if it is from some other country then, yes, you also need to make sure that it is public domain in its country of origin because, as CalendulaAsteraceae said, we require PD (or free-licensed, but this won't be) in both U.S. and country of origin. And I agree that if you have a similar question in the future, Commons:Village pump/Copyright is the best place to ask. - Jmabel ! talk 05:34, 16 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Logo from a company

edit

Making a wikipedia page about a video game developed by a company. And I want to use footage from the game and the studio's logo in the wiki. Am I allowed to? Worth mentioning, that the pictures have already been publicly shown and aren't secret or anything. Nelshmy (talk) 11:11, 16 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Unless it's free licensed, it cannot be used here on the Commons website. But you can ask your question on the Wikipedia website where you want to use it. For example on the English-language Wikipedia, you could ask at en:Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. -- Asclepias (talk) 12:21, 16 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for answering. One of the photos were under Creative Commons license 4.0. Which If I remember correctly, were eligible for use. Nelshmy (talk) 13:12, 16 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Nelshmy: If an item is explicitly offered under a free license issued by the copyright owner, then it's ok, but to be free a license "CC 4.0" must not be of the type "NC" (non commercial) or "ND" (no derivatives). If there is no free license, you could contact the copyright owner and ask if they would agree to offer a free license on one image. If they agree, they can either indicate explicitly the free license on one of their websites or social media accounts, or they can send an email to Wikimedia as explained in the page Commons:VRT. I found your draft on the English-language Wikipedia. The logo of the company looks like it might be considered too simple to be copyrightable, so it could be on Commons. See the page Commons:Threshold of originality. You may want to obtain more opinions about the logo by asking at Commons:Village pump/Copyright. -- Asclepias (talk) 14:00, 16 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
