Description
English: Presumed portrait of Claudia de' Medici (1604-1648), wife of Archduke Leopold, misidentified with her co-sister-in-law Eleonora Gonzaga (1598-1655), wife of Emperor Ferdinand II [1] [2].
  • Identification based on the comparison with some portraits of Claudia de' Medici (see images below) and the lack of physical resemblance of the sitter of this portrait to verified representations of Empress Eleonora.
It is said to depict the second wife of Emperor Ferdinand II (1598-1655); however, based on the portrait features, it could rather be the third wife of Emperor Ferdinand III - also named Eleonore Gonzaga (1630-1686); it is also conceivable that she is her daughter Eleonore of Austria (1653-1697), wife of Duke Charles V of Lorraine, governor of Tyrol; depicted as Saint Catherine with a martyr's palm branch and wheel. [3])
