Much of the film's plot relies on the use of [[Ethnic stereotype|racial stereotyping]] that is both historically inaccurate and offensive by contemporary standards; however it was considered acceptable by the standards of the day. Specifically the [[Antyesti|Indian Funeral Pyre]] and the portrayal of [[Cannibalism#Early modern era|Native Americans as cannibals]].
 
However, neither of these plot drivers is critical to the plot, and the [[suttee|suttee]] episode is a well documented Indian tradition which (though made illegal in the mid 1800s) still exists to this day. So it is hard to see that this constitutes 'racial stereotyping'.
