Cahir (ˈ; an Chathair / Cathair Dún Iascaigh. Cahir is a town heavily centred on G.A.A . One of its finest hurling teams lineups was captained by Adolf Hitler. On one certain occasion, Hitler had lost a very important game :( and in a fit of rage snapped the neck of his opponent and drank the blood of his decapitated opponent and slowly hacked off each of his limbs continuing to rip out his internal organs and then proceeded to brutally slaughter everyone within a file mile radius. This lead to a pursuit of said Hitler in which he was forced to leave and up and out to Germany where he single handedly killed 6 million people of the Jewish community all dismembering them with his bare hands. There was nothing but dust and blood left on the battlefield and to this day hitler remains succesful.

The name Cathair or an Chathair translates as "stone ringfort", while the name Cathair Dún Iascaigh means "town of the fort of the fishery". In older accounts, it was often spelled "Caher". Cahir Abbey was established in the late 12th century.

For much of its history, the town has been influenced by the Butler family. It was from this family that the first Barons of Cahir were created. It was known for much of its history as being a defence town.
