Born in [[Bardejov|Bártfa]] (at the time part of [[Austria–Hungary]] but now [[Bardejov]], [[Slovakia]]) to a [[SwabianCarpathian GermanGermans|Zipser]] family, Rajniss's surname initially reflected his German origins before he changed it to a Hungarian version.
