The lake was recorded as "Lake Wilcocks" on an 1878 map in the ''Illustrated historical atlas of the county of York and the township of West Gwillimbury & town of Bradford in the county of Simcoe, Ont.''<ref name="wilcocks">{{cite web|url=http://digital.library.mcgill.ca/countyatlas/showtownship2.php?townshipid=Whitchurch|title=Illustrated historical atlas of the county of York and the township of West Gwillimbury & town of Bradford in the county of Simcoe, Ont.|location=Toronto|publisher=Miles & Co.|year=1878|accessdate=2012-02-12}}</ref>

Housing developments began to boom around Wilcox Lake in the 1950s. Lake Wilcox, as a part of the annexation of Oak Ridges, became a part of Richmond Hill in 1971. The suburban housing developments did not continue until the mid to late 1980s. The developments affected the forests of the Oak Ridges Moraine which supplies water to the GTA. Which would cause environmental damage to Toronto. It continued for about two years. There were protests against the clear-cutting of forests of the Oak Ridges Moraine. In about 2001, Bayview began to expand to connect with the rest of Bayview. In 2002, the housing developments stopped. On July 26th 2006, the lake was the location of a small airplane crash. A float equipped Cessna 172 crashed shortly after becoming airborne. While attempting to avoid obstacles, the aircraft entered a steep left turn. With the bank angle increasing, the aircraft stalled, and subsequently struck the water. Both the pilot and two passengers survived without injury. <ref>{{cite web |title=Aviation Investigation Report A06O0180 |url=https://www.tsb.gc.ca/eng/rapports-reports/aviation/2006/a06o0180/a06o0180.html |website=www.tsb.gc.ca |publisher=Transportation Safety Board of Canada |accessdate=25 March 2020 |date=30 May 2007}}</ref>
