Jose Lopez Gutierrez (1900 - 1968) was a painter, author, Professor and innovator who contributed to the development of acrylic paints.

Early Life

b. March 19, 1900 in Miacatlan, in the state of Morelos, México. [1] Emigrated to US around 1916 Resided in San Francisco until 1921, then moved to NYC[1] and returned to Mexico Cityin 1925. Married in Mexico City in1925. Returned to NYC in 1925 and remained a resident. Became a US citizen in 1931? Not sure of year. Left US in 1945 (post Second World War) to paint a mural in Havana, Cuba. Went to Mexico City in 1945-6(?) and resided there until his death Sept. 2 1968

A retrospective exhibition of his paintings was hosted by the Pratt Institute Gallery in 1967.[1]

He is credited with the development of plastic formulations for painting using acrylic, vinyl, and ethyl silicate[1]

Academic

In 1945, he established the Taller de Ensayo de Materiales Plásticos at the Instituto Politécnico Nacional in Mexico City.[1]
