On 2 July 2024, a stampede occurred during a religious event in the Hathras district of Uttar Pradesh, India resulting in the deaths of at least 107 people, most of whom were women.[1]

Background

The stampede occurred during a satsang in the village of Mughal Garhi.[3] Initial reports stated that over 15,000 people had gathered for the event, which only had the capacity for 5,000.[4]

Aftermath

Yogi Adityanath, chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, announced an ex gratia assistance of ₹2 lakh each to the family of the deceased and ₹50,000 for those injured.
