Discovered on March 25, 1971 by [[Cornelis Johannes van Houten]] and [[Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld]] on [[photographic plate]]s taken by [[Tom Gehrels]] at the [[Palomar Observatory]] using the [[Samuel Oschin telescope]], it was given the [[provisional designation]] "2140 T-1". It was later renamed "Aue" after [[Hartmann von Aue]], a [[German people|German]] poet and participant in the [[Third Crusade]].<ref>MPC 34356 ''Minor Planet Center''</ref>
