Coolmunda Dam is situated 13 km east of Inglewood on the Cunningham Highway. Constructed in 1968 for irrigation and town water, the lake holds 69,000 ML of water at 100% capacity at an average depth of 4.3 m (14 ft) and has a surface area of 1,740 ha.
The total catchment area for the dam is 1,735 km2 (670 sq mi).[2] Coolmunda Dam is filled by the Macintrye Brook waterway.[3] Two smaller creeks, Bracker Creek and Sandy Creek, also provide inflows.
The dam is owned and managed by SunWater. For visitors to the dam, there is one boat ramp, three picnic areas with good facilities as well as a caravan park.[3] Free bush camping by the lake is permitted. There are no boating restrictions in place.[3] Parts of the dam contain stretches of standing timber and along the northern bank there are submerged fence posts the demark a former creek bed.[3]
Fishing
Eel-tailed catfish and spangled perch are found naturally in the dam's waters. The dam is stocked by the Lake Coolmunda Restocking Group Inc, with murray cod, silver perch and golden perch.[3] The dreaded european carp was also found in the lake.[4] A Stocked Impoundment Permit is required to fish in the dam.[5]
