On June 27, 2024, the first debate in the 2024 United States presidential election was held, with incumbent president Joe Biden, the Democratic nominee, debating the Republican nominee, former president Donald Trump, who Biden defeated in the 2020 United States presidential election. Before the debate and throughout his presidency, there have been concerns about Biden's age.[1] When Biden first took office at the age of 78 on January 20, 2021, he immediately became the oldest person to serve as President of the United States,[2] and during the debate Biden was 81, while Trump had turned 78 years old weeks prior. During the debate, Biden made multiple gaffes, such as saying that he had "finally beat Medicare"[3] and was described as being weak and frail[4] by some following the debate.

In the aftermath of the debate, many called for Biden to drop out of the presidential race to allow for a different Democratic candidate to be picked at the 2024 Democratic National Convention. A poll conducted by CBS News/YouGov found that 72% of voters did not believe Biden was capable of being President.[5][6] Some close to Biden have said that he appears cognitively worse than he did a year ago.[7] Democratic Senator Mark Warner is said to be attempting to organize a group in an effort to convince Biden to drop out,[8][9][10] however, Biden has refuted any possibility of him doing so.[11]
