This is an overview, for details, see: mobile phone.
Examples of non-flip cell phones.

A cell phone (or cellphone or cellular phone or cellular telephone)[1] is a long-range, electronic device used for mobile voice or data communication over a network of specialized base stations known as cell sites. In addition to the standard voice function of a cellular phone, as a telephone, current mobile phones may support many additional services, and accessories.

Those services and accessories include: SMS for text messaging, email, packet switching for access to the Internet, gaming, Bluetooth, infrared, camera with video recorder and MMS for sending and receiving photos and video, MP3 player, radio and GPS. Most current mobile phones connect to a cellular network of base stations (cell sites), which is in turn interconnected to the public switched telephone network (PSTN), with the exception of satellite phones. As of 2009, mobile phones have become very popular in the developed world.

Note that a wireless phone connected to a landline is called a "cordless phone".

Mobile communication standards

The various standards, for mobile-phone communication, are defined for dozens of configurations. They are grouped according to the family of communications protocols.

For the cdmaOne / CDMA2000 (3GPP2) Family:

  • cdmaOne (2G)
  • CDMA2000 (3G)

For the AMPS Family:

For other technologies:
