Political Career

Member of Legislative Assembly 1st Term Malleswaram (1989-1994)

Vedavyas was elected for the first term to the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly in 1989[6]. As an MLA, he gave major impetus to the Pedana (erstwhile Malleswaram) constituency by implementing several major road and irrigation development projects.

Deputy Speaker (1992-1994)

Vedavyas soon earned a name for himself by his integrity and sincerity in work through various roles and was elected unanimously as the youngest 13th Deputy Speaker of Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly[7] in 1992 at the age of 32. This period was known for the most astutely deliberated proceedings of the state assembly, the manner in which he preserved the order and decorum of the house at a young age earned high regard from leaders like the then CM Kotla Vijaya Bhaskara Reddy, NT Rama Rao, then opposition leader, Chandra Babu Naidu, and several others. Under his leadership, the Krishna district had witnessed tremendous growth. Even today, the people in the district cherish the memory of converting 150 km of single-lane roads to double-lane roads during this period.

Work as an Opposition MLA -- Hunger Strike (2001)

In 2001, as an opposition leader[8], Vedavyas went on a six-day hunger strike in Machilipatnam demanding the National Highway status for NH 214A and that its passage should include Machilipatnam. His 6-day long fast-unto-death brought the highway connectivity to Bantumilli, Pedana, Machilipatnam, Avanigadda and Digamarru. His relentless struggle saw a massive movement build and the government had to concede both his demands.

Member of Legislative Assembly, 2nd Term Malleswaram (2004-2009)

During his second tenure as MLA[9], Tsunami struck the east cost of Bay of Bengal causing heavy floods and crop damage. The constituency primarily being a agri and aqua based region suffered severe drought and had not received water for 3 consecutive years Despite the crisis throughout the state, Vedavyas rigorously followed up with authorities and ensured due compensation was released for the second crop to the farmers. The G.O was issued by the Congress government then lead by CM Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy.

Chairman of the Estimates Committee, and Panel Speaker during his tenure as an MLA for the second term (2004-2009)

As Estimates Committee[10] Chairman, AP Legislative Assembly, he inspected and reviewed some major infrastructure projects such as the Bhakra Nangal Dam, Howrah Bridge and several state irrigation projects with a vision to improve the infrastructure in the state.

MUDA (Machilipatnam Urban Development Authority) Chairman (2018 - 2020)

Vedavyas served as the first Chairman of the newly formed Machilipatnam Urban Development Authority in 2018[11]. With a long standing political career Veda Vyas took up the responsibility to generate a qualitative vision of the town in the framework of region’s future based on a sound participatory process to articulate the aspirations and needs of people from all spheres, including the common man. In a record 5 months time of taking charge Vedavyas met with hundreds of farmers from the region explaining them the socio-economic consequences of the proposed Machilipatnam port[12] and acquired 1200 Acres of private land.
