Fabien Cousteau (born 2 October 1967) is a French aquatic filmmaker and oceanographic explorer.
Early life and education
He is a son of Jean-Michel Cousteau and Anne-Marie (Lafon) Cousteau, and grandson of the noted oceanographic explorer Jacques-Yves Cousteau and Simone (Melchior) Cousteau. He has one sister, Céline Cousteau. Born in Paris, he grew up in both France and the United States, and frequently accompanied his grandfather and father on their sea voyages.[citation needed] He graduated from Boston University.[citation needed]
Career
Cousteau's first known scuba dive was an hour and a half "buddy-breathing" dive with a family friend in a swimming pool on his fourth birthday.[citation needed] Cousteau has done intensive study of sharks in their natural habitat, with the use of a submarine he calls "Troy". The submarine is a specially built "Trojan Shark" (designed and built by Eddie Paul),[citation needed] in the shape of a great white shark.
Cousteau spent several hundred hours filming sharks in preparation for his documentary film on the subject, titled Mind of a Demon, which aired on CBS, in June of 2006.[citation needed] Cousteau developed the idea of a shark-shaped submersible based on a childhood memory of the cover of a French-language comic book, The Adventures of Tintin: Le trésor de Rackham le rouge, that featured such a craft (which at the time, was imaginary).[citation needed]
Cousteau is the executive director and founder of 'Plant A Fish', a nonprofit dedicated to the restoration of the world's water bodies through active community engagement and education. It was founded on what would have been his grandfather's 100th birthday in 2010.[citation needed] He is actively involved in various environmental and ocean advocacy projects in the U.S. and overseas.
