Antaragni is the cultural festival of IIT Kanpur, held annually in October/November, and is one of the biggest college festivals in India. Since its inception, the fest has gained enormous popularity among college-goers across the country, a fact evident by the exponential rise in the crowds attending it each year. This year (2008) the festival is scheduled to take place between 23rd to 26th October and is surely going to be bigger and better than ever before.

Etymology

Devanagari: अन्तराग्नि
Antarāgni (Hindi Antar: Within, Agni: Fire) stands for 'The Fire Within'. There is some controversy regarding the appropriateness of the name. In Sanskrit, the combination of 'Antar' and 'Agni' should give the word which may be pronounced as un-tur-ugh-nee while the current pronunciation is un-tur-aag-nee.

The Four Day Fiesta

The four days of Antaragni are jam-packed with a myriad of competitions, workshops, exhibitions, talent shows, live performances, games and not to forget, lots of attractive prizes. The excitement and euphoria among the participants is palpable, so much so that people start pouring in more than a day before the inauguration ceremony.

Antaragni is more than a fun-fest for some and for this creed, the Antaragni Competitions brings more than a reason to cheer in the shape of Music, Dance, Photography and Art competitions. In addition to this, there are some adrenaline-pumping contests presented by the Literary and Quiz events. From 2008, a film-making contest is also being introduced which is expected to draw a sizeable participation.

Attracting some eye-catching talent is the personality contest Mridaksh. Participants from various colleges display their on-stage talents and battle some tricky questions from the judges and two of the best are adjudged Mr. And Ms. Mridaksh.

Antaragni provides an exciting stage for all the budding fashion designers too in the shape of an event titled Ritambhara. Teams from renowned fashion schools in India converge to fight for top honours and win accolades for their outfit designs.

For all the poetry buffs, Antaragni brings Kavi Sammelan which acts as a melting pot for well-known poets across the country. In the past few years the event has brought together poets of the likes of Suresh Awasthi, Shiv Om Ambar, Manjeet Singh, Surya Kumar Pandey and Kavita Tiwari and has become a major crowd puller.

Another event named ‘India Inspired’ has become one of the cardinal events of Antaragni. The event was started with the aim of using this enormous youth platform to increase awareness about socio-political issues like the Right to Information Act, Judiciary vs. Government and the Role of Youth in Politics (2008). The event has attracted various eminent personalities like Arun Shourie, Prabhu Chawla and Narayanmurthy, and has generated immense interest among the participating crowds.

Antaragni also brings a number of workshops for the DIY crowd. These serve as an invaluable fun-learning platform for the people involved as well as a wonderful opportunity for the students from different regions to interact with each other. The Salsa workshop held last year was a tremendous hit among the participating students.

There is place for some pure fun too, with a special event, aptly named The Mall, on during the entire day. It is organised strategically at the Student Activity Centre in the campus, which is the hub of all the fest activity. The event includes treasure hunts, 2-minute games, dares, paper dancing and fun quizzes. Attractive prizes are for the taking here too. For those who like to let their hair down and shake a leg, there is a discotheque with well-known DJs belting out foot-tapping numbers till late night. A Karaoke Nite is also held where people are seen singing, as well as they can, and having a fun-filled time.

Among the highlights of Antaragni are the Professional Shows. In the recent past, the festival has seen the likes of KK, Euphoria and Atif Aslam. Last year, the crowds swooned to the tunes of Finnish Rock band ‘Poets of the Fall’. In addition to this, the opening night has witnessed renowned performers like veena player Pt. Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, dancer Astaad Debo and mimicry maestro Nerella Venumadhav.

Synchronicity, the Rock event, brings forward the best rock bands of India like Parikrama, Five-eights, Crescent Sun, all of them competing for the ‘Best Band’ title. This presents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to all the enthusiastic head-bangers to do what they love to do.

With such a large number of events, competitions and shows being organised in a very professional manner, Antaragni is a big-budget fiesta. The fest is thus sponsored by the likes of Nokia, Schlumberger, Gibson, IndianOil, UrbanHack, Tata Indicom, Pepsi, Fastrack, etc. which add brand value to this unique college cultural festival.
