Atlético Universidad was a Peruvian football club, playing in the city of Arequipa.

History

The Atlético Universidad of Arequipa was founded February 24, 1964 by a sportsmen students group of the Universidad Nacional San Agustín.

The team was recorded in the league of soccer of Arequipa in 1964 and quickly scaled the categories of Third (1964) and Second (1965) and entered to the first division of Arequipa in 1966.

During the three following decades complied regular campaigns to the interior of its league and did not have participation in the different phases of Peru Cup, therefore remained displaced by other teams of greater renown and hierarchy as the Sportivo Huracán, FBC Pierola, FBC Aurora, that even arrived at soldier in the maximum division of the Peruvian soccer.

The first one great campaign of the Atlético Universidad is produced the year 2000 when itself crown for the first time champion in its history of the department of Arequipa and therefore representative in the Regional Phase in which resulted eliminated by hand of the Coronel Bolognesi. The second notable campaign is given the year 2001 in which imposes conditions in the department of Arequipa and disputes again the Regional Phase. In this instance is eliminated for the Deportivo Bolito of Tacna.

The Atlético Universidad was by third time consecutive champion of the department of Arequipa. It achieved the title of its Region after leaving sideways to the Bureau FC of Tacna and to the Mariscal Nieto of Ilo, then in the National Phase to the Senati of Cusco, subsequently to the León de Huánuco and finally achievement the title of the Peru Cup after being imposed in the end to the Atlético Grau (1-1, 2-4).

The club played three years in the First Division, but upon remaining among the last places of the championship 2005 had to descend to Second Division. To starts of the year 2006 its executives decided that the team withdraw of the soccer, selling its category to the Alfonso Ugarte of Puno.
