Jozef van Wissem (born 1962 in Maastricht) is a Dutch minimalist composer and lute player[1] based in Brooklyn.[2]

Career

Jozef Van Wissem released Ex Patris, which was described by Daniel Martin-McCormick of Dusted Magazine as "an album that is difficult to criticize, elegant, spare, haunting, beautiful and at the same time brimming with prickly attitude", on Important Records in 2010.[3]

He released The Joy That Never Ends, an album with guest musicians such as Jim Jarmusch and Jeanne Madic, on Important Records in 2011.[4] He also wrote a score for the 2011 video game The Sims Medieval.[5]

Concerning the Entrance into Eternity, his first collaborative album with Jim Jarmusch, was released on Important Records in early 2012.[5] It was described by Marc Masters of Pitchfork Media as "the first full release Van Wissem has made with an actual punk rocker."[6]

The Mystery of Heaven, his second collaborative album with Jarmusch, was released on Sacred Bones Records later that year.[7] The track "The More She Burns the More Beautifully She Glows" features a guest appearance from Tilda Swinton.[8] Nick Neyland of Pitchfork Media said: "Even when they reach peak noise, [...] it's more hypnotic than aggressive."[9] Jarmusch asked van Wissem to score his upcoming film Only Lovers Left Alive.[10]
