Konkuk University (Korean: 건국대학교, Hanja: 建國大學校) is a private university located in Seoul and Chungju. The Seoul campus is located in the southeastern part of Seoul, near the Han River, and is served by a metro station of the same name. The university possesses accreditation from the South Korean Ministry of Culture and Education. The university emphasizes technology and science majors and research.[9][10][11] The mascots of the university are the cows Konhee and Konwoo.
History
Beginnings
Dr. Yoo Suk-Chang (유석창) was known as a patriot during Japanese colonial rule founding a hospital and publishing a newsletter. Konkuk University was originally founded by Dr. Yoo as the Chosun Political Science School in May 1946 based on Chien kuo University (만주 건국대학, 建國大學)'s materials in Hsinking, Manchukuo. 2 years later in May 1948 the school was expanded with the Chosun Political Science Institute. In 1949 the names were changed to Political Science Foundation and Political Science College. At that time both were also "authorized as a formal higher education institution". After a 1955 move to Jangan-dong, Seoul the names were again changed to Konkuk University Foundation and Konkuk University.[12]
Organization
Konkuk University is an endowed educational institution and governed by the president and the board of Konkuk University foundation. The Seoul campus includes fifteen colleges, sixty-four departments, and eleven professional graduate schools. The Chungju campus includes five colleges, thirty-six departments. A total of 25,700 students are enrolled at these two campuses. Undergraduate programs are provided by each department of all colleges. Also general graduate programs are provided by each college. Besides professional schools among graduate schools are out of colleges.[13][14][15][16]
The Campus
One of the distinctive features of the Konkuk campus is the large number of stones (about 1.5 meters by 2 meters) from many countries around the world. The main axes of the university are lined, on each side, by these stones, each of which features an inscription—often a motto, poem or quotation from a major literary work—which illustrates something important about the donating country. On the back, there is a translation into Korean, and also into English for non-English language inscriptions. To date, there are nearly 200 of these stones at Konkuk.
