Kevin Michael McHale (born June 14, 1988)[1] is an American actor, dancer, and singer. Formerly of the boy band NLT, McHale is known for his role as Artie Abrams on the Fox television series Glee.

Life and career

McHale was born in Plano, Texas, the youngest of four children. McHale is descended from emigrants from County Mayo, Ireland.[2]

He reportedly grew up with Disney Channel actress and singer Demi Lovato. Before becoming an actor, McHale joined an American boy group, NLT, which is short for "Not Like Them". The R&B group was discovered by Chris Stokes. On March 13, 2007, they released their first single, "That Girl". The following month they opened (with Chantelle Paige) for The Pussycat Dolls.[3] The band also had a guest appearance in Bratz: The Movie. On April 30, 2009, group member Travis Michael Garland announced that NLT had split.

McHale currently stars on Glee as Artie Abrams, a member of the McKinley High glee club with a physical disability. Although his character is in a wheelchair, McHale is a skilled dancer and has said that it is hard to keep his feet from moving along with the music while on the set. He had his first solo single on Glee singing "Dancing with Myself" in the episode "Wheels". In the episode "Dream On", he danced in a fantasy sequence to "The Safety Dance" and sang "Dream a Little Dream of Me". In the episode "Britney/Brittany" of the second season of Glee, he sang a solo (in a dream sequence), "Stronger", after being anesthetized by a dentist for dental surgery. He also danced in a dream sequence alongside Harry Shum, Jr. to the song "Scream" in the third season episode "Michael". He is currently the only actor on the series to have been present in every episode.

McHale's acting credits include a 2007 appearance on NBC's The Office in the season 4 episode "Launch Party", where he played a pizza delivery boy who is taken hostage by Steve Carell's character, Michael Scott. In 2008, McHale was on HBO's True Blood for two[1] episodes as Neil Jones, a coroner's assistant. Kevin was also in three episodes of Nickelodeon's hit show Zoey 101 as Dooley.

In 2010, McHale appeared briefly in One Call's music video "Blacklight" alongside former NLT bandmate Justin Thorne, who is a member of One Call. In June 2011, McHale appeared in Katy Perry's music video for her song "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)" with fellow Glee cast member Darren Criss. On July 22, 2012, McHale co-hosted the 2012 Teen Choice Awards with Demi Lovato.[4] In September 2012, he and his dog Sophie appeared in a PETA ad campaign, promoting the adoption of shelter animals.[5]
