Location of Bancroft County (Larrabee County was supposed to have the same area as Bancroft or Crocker County. [1]

Larrabee County was a proposed county in the northern part of Kossuth County, Iowa. It was named after governor William Larrabee.[2]

Background

While Iowa was creating counties, it had 48 counties until January 15 1851, when 52 new counties were created.[3]

Bancroft County

Among these 52 counties was Kossuth County, and Bancroft County. [4] Bancroft County was not suitable for farming as it was a wetland so it merged with Kossuth County, which therefore meant it could not survive on its own. This made Iowa’s number of counties turn from having 100 counties to 99 counties, and as a result, Kossuth County became the largest county.. [5]

Crocker County

On May 13 1870, Crocker County was established after the unification of Kossuth and Bancroft. It had the same area as Bancroft County, however it later merged back as its area was too small according to the constitution, so it was disestablished. [2]

Proposal

On February 22, 1913, the idea for a new county was proposed. It would be named Larrabee County after William Larrabee. In 1914, there was an election in Kossuth County held for whether or not a new county should be established. Larrabee County ended up not becoming established. [1]
