Early life

Hanna was born in New Castle, Pennsylvania and has six siblings. Hanna is of Lebanese, French, and Polish descent.[6] Her first job was cashier at a local Pizza Joe’s in her home town.[7]

She graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in psychology and communications. She was a member of Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority.[8]

Before starting on Vine, Hanna worked as a bartender in Indiana, Pennsylvania and a waitress in her home town of New Castle. She then moved to Ohio for another job and eventually moved to Los Angeles, California to pursue an acting career and focus on her role as a social media influencer.

While starting to make it big on Vine, Hanna worked for a marketing company that sold products out of a Sam's Club. She quickly became the top salesperson in the United States for the company, However, she departed from the company after realizing it was essentially a pyramid scheme.[9]

Career

2013–2016: Vine and YouTube success

Hanna began uploading skits to Vine in late 2013, and later gained recognition for her comedy videos on the Vine app, where she accumulated just under five million followers.[10] In 2014, she also set up her YouTube channel, Gabbie Hanna (formerly titled The Gabbie Show), which featured storytime videos. Her channel has acquired over 6 million subscribers and over 850 million views.[11] In 2015, she competed on and won the fourth season of the dance competition web-series Dance Showdown with Matt Steffanina as her partner.[12]

After graduating college, Hanna moved to Los Angeles, California to work with internet media company Buzzfeed. Hanna eventually left the company to focus on her YouTube and Vine platforms. She later created a second YouTube channel, The Gabbie Vlogs, which has gained over 1.6 million subscribers and 150 million views.[11][13] In 2016, Vine was shut down, and Hanna subsequently focused on YouTube.[14]

In late 2016, Hanna joined the lip sync tour Drop the Mic, alongside other YouTubers.[15]

2017: Acting, debut musical releases, and Adultolescence

Her debut book, Adultolescence, was released on September 19, 2017. The book chronicles Hanna's struggles throughout her life through a series of poems. Hanna promoted the book with a tour from September 19 to 27 in eight US cities.[16] Hanna also released the single "Out Loud" on September 6, 2017 to promote Adultolescence.[17][18] The single reached #3 on the US iTunes charts.[19] The official music video for the single was released in October 2017. Hanna later announced plans to release an album.[20] Her second single, "Satellite" was released on November 21, 2017 and peaked at No. 12 on the U.S. iTunes Chart.[21]

In 2017, the Talent Agency CAA signed Hanna, and she joined the social media team of MTV the same year. She hosted backstage for the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards and co-hosted the revival of Total Request Live in October of the same year.[22][23] In 2017, Hanna joined the main cast of web series Escape the Night as 'the Vaudevillian' and appeared in seven episodes.[24][25] Hanna previously had a small role as Lindsey in Laid in America.[26]

On August 1, 2018, Hanna released a music video on her YouTube channel for a promotional single entitled "Roast Yourself" (alternatively titled "Roast Yourself (Harder)") which spoke out on how social media creators live. It peaked at No. 21 on the U.S. iTunes chart.[28]At the end of this video, Hanna announced the release of her single "Honestly" on August 15. On August 14, The Fine Bros posted a YouTube video of other YouTube creators reacting to and commenting on the music video.[29]

Hanna released the singles "Honestly" and "Honestly (Encore)" on August 15, 2018. The singles reached No. 1 and No. 2 respectively on the U.S. iTunes chart, making her the fourth artist to have two songs ranking at No. 1 and No. 2 respectively in 2018, the others being Shawn Mendes, Cardi B, and Nicki Minaj.[30]

On September 19, 2018, Hanna announced that her upcoming debut album is titled This Time Next Year.[31] Hanna released the single "Monster" on October 26, 2018.[32] Previously, Hanna had announced that "Monster" would be accompanied by another song, "Monster (Reborn)".[33] Both songs were released together and are to be featured on her album. The songs peaked at No. 12 and No. 15 respectively on the U.S. iTunes chart.[34][35] In similar fashion to "Honestly" and "Honestly (Encore)", "Monster" and "Monster (Reborn)" were featured in a double music video.[36] In the music video, "Monster (Reborn)" was prefaced with a sample of a news cast. This sample was also included in the official release of the song.[37]

At the 8th Annual Streamy Awards, Hanna won Storyteller of the Year. She was also nominated for the First Person Award and the Audience Choice: Creator of the Year Award.[38]

In an interview with Tom Ward on November 26, 2018, Hanna stated that her album will be released at an undetermined time in 2019. She also plans to release a merchandise clothing line that is all hand drawn "very soon". In the same interview, Hanna stated that she plans to release a second book around the same time as her album so that she can tour for both at the same time.[39]

On November 28, 2018, Forbes released an article titled "YouTuber Gabbie Hanna Turns Her Haters Into Motivators" where they discussed Hanna’s "humble beginnings" and compared her to other popular YouTubers such as Shane Dawson and Emma Chamberlain.[40]

Personal life

In early 2018, Hanna began semi-publicly dating a man who fans dubbed the "mystery man". He often appeared in her Vlogs and Instagram Stories with his face blurred out or covered by an emoji.[41] On July 4, 2018, Hanna released a lengthy video about a pathological liar she dated. In the video, she confirms it was the "Instagram mystery man".[42] In an interview with Genius Verified, Hanna confirmed that the "mystery man" was the inspiration for her song "Honestly".[43]

Hanna has openly discussed her struggles with depression multiple times. She has also opened up about her struggles with eating disorders and body dysmorphia.[44]

In an interview with Adam Grandmaison, Hanna stated she was raised Catholic and believes in God, but doesn’t agree with some of the Catholic stances on topics such as homosexuality and sex before marriage.[45]
