Film career

Gayathri started acting at 14. She has said that she never dreamt that she would be an actress but that offers kept "pouring in from tap".[2] She had insisted on being known by her full name to avoid confusion with another actress, Gayatri Jayaraman, who was also active in period.[3]

Her debut film was with actor Prabhu Deva whom she shared her experience Charlie Chaplin (2002), which was followed by a serial each in Kannada (Manasella Neene), Tamil (Style) and Malayalam (Nakshathrakkannulla Rajakumaran Avanundoru Rajakumari). Subsequently, she quit films to relocate to the USA.[4]

She returned in 2008 as a choreographer with films like Jayam Kondaan (2008) and Poi Solla Porom (2008) and has since worked in big budget productions including Osthe (2011), Alex Pandian (2013), Anjaan (2014) and Muthuramalingam (2017).[2][5] Her work in the satire Tamil Padam was well received.[6] By 2014, she had choreographed around 100 films.[2]

Personal life

Gayathri was born to dance choreographers Raghuram and Girija Raghuram in 1983.[7] Her elder sister Suja is also a prominent dancer and actress.[8] She is the great grand daughter of director Krishnaswami Subrahmanyam.
