Corrib Gas Project

I-RMS works closely with An Garda Síochána to provide security for the various sites surrounding the landfall of the Corrib gas project pipeline at Glengad beach in Erris, County Mayo [4] where protesters who are opposed to the pipeline route have sought to disrupt work.

Complaints have been made to the Private Security Authority that all 156 I-RMS employees working on the project do not wear correct identification[5]. No formal action was taken, though the PSA has confirmed it was "working with" the company to ensure staff wore identification, commenting that it was the most monitored private security company in Ireland[5].

It denied involvement in two incidents related to the Shell Corrib project:

  • An alleged assault on protester Willie Corduff at one of the compounds in April 2009, which resulted in his hospitalisation. [6][7]The company later confirmed that employees had intended to remove Corduff, but found him standing up, and had him taken away by ambulance when he complained of chest pains[8].
  • The sinking of a fishing boat belonging to another campaigner, Pat O'Donnell, in June 2009[8]. An online video, originally posted by one 'MyKaczy', shows O'Donnell being followed and taunted at Glengad Pier.[9] MyKaczy has posted other videos on YouTube, with accompanying offensive comments against protesters, some of which were clearly shot within a compound of the Shell Corrib project manned by I-RMS employees.[10]

Michael Dwyer

I-RMS attracted considerable media attention following the revelation that a former employee, Michael Dwyer, shot dead by Bolivian police in April 2009, had worked for the firm on the Shell Corrib project[11]. Dwyer had travelled to Bolivia with four other former I-RMS employees[12], supposedly to join a bodyguard training course, but ended up in the armed entourage of Eduardo Rózsa-Flores, who was also shot dead by police. Rózsa-Flores was suspected of attempting to subvert the government of Evo Morales.[13] The media has speculated that the link between Dwyer and Rózsa-Flores was former I-RMS employee Tibor Revesz.[14] Revesz is also a member of the Szekler Legion, a paramilitary group that wants autonomy for Hungarians living in Romania.[15] Dwyer also befriended, in Ireland, another Legion member, Elod Toaso, who was arrested in the same Bolivia Incident.[16] The company confirmed that two of those who travelled with Dwyer resigned in late May 2009.[17] I-RMS's website previously offered 'special services' including 'international armed and unarmed security', but these were removed during updates after Dwyer's death.[18]
