'''I too sing America By Langston Hughes' Background Information

I too sing America is a poem published in the Crisis in the year 1925. The poem is about how during a rough patch in

history, he even though shunned and disgraced by the white people he still came through the next day. His people were treated like dirt in those harsh yet expected days. The white men always saying "you can't sit here" or in this case "Go into the kitchen". The next day it will change, the things that used to happen will not happen anymore, according to his poem.

Langston Hughes was an American writer: poetry, novels, plays, and short stories. He lived from February1,1902-May22,1967.

He is most famous for writing about the Harlem renaissance during the 1920s to 1930s era. He is of three races Native American, African American, and European American. He started writing poetry though his father did not express support for his love of writing poetry, so at Columbia University he studied Engineering instead of literary arts or journalism.

The poem is important because it told of how he struggled to 'fit in' with the white people, he believes that he is

equal to the white people. He believes that he can sit and eat with the white people. He wants to sit on the same bench as the white people, but they won't let him.A time will come when he will be appreciated like the white people, because he too sings America. The Harlem Renaissance as many of his other poems has inspired 'I too sing America'. The racial segregation during his time influenced the creation of this poem. It also was published in His collected poems in 1994. It is reminded of the poem 'let America be America again' still speaking about the racism not only he, but his black brothers and sisters.

Analysis

What is happening in the poem in literal terms he would be saying the people had guests and sent him into the kitchen and he eats and gains the necessary things to grow strong.. He will laugh because they think they are affecting him by not letting him eat them, but in reality he gets more food. When you are in the kitchen you get more food than in the dining room. He will come the next day and sit with them in the dining room with the guests and they won't do anything about it.

The poem shows that the racism can be stopped if we work to stop it. I too sing America even in the title makes the point that he is also American and should be treated like such. An American should have all the benefits of being an American, not just being called American. I too sing America by Langston Hughes talks about how the blacks were treated like they weren't the equals of whites, but in reality the races are all equal.

But I laugh and eat well and grow strong' means that he is going to be better than them because what has been offered to him is less comfortable but he still finds a way to survive. He is warning them of the future successes of the blacks or as he stated in his poem the darker brother. Influenced

The poem was used in the movie The Great Debaters directed by Denzel Washington starring actors/actresses Nate Parker, Denzel Washington, Denzel Whitaker, Forest Whitaker, and Jurnee Smollett. It was used by Washington's character Melvin B. Tolson in the opening scene of the movie which also corrected the character Hamilton Burgess portrayed by Jermaine Williams.
