[[Volcanology of Chile]] studies a continuous volcanic process that has a strong influence on [[Chile]]an [[geography of Chile|landscape]], [[geology of Chile|geology]], [[economy of Chile|economy]] and society. [[Volcanism]] constantly renews the Chilean landscape with [[lava]] flows, [[volcanic plateau|lava plateaus]], [[lava dome]]s, [[cinder cone]]s, [[stratovolcano]]es, [[shield volcano]]es, [[submarine volcano]]es, [[caldera]]s, [[diatreme]]s, and [[maar]]s. However volcanism in Chile as well as in other parts of the world is also associated with several natural hazards such as [[lahar]]s, [[earthquake]]s, [[pyroclastic flow]]s, [[toxic]] gases and [[volcanic ash|ash]]. [[Continental Chile]] has a high concentration of active [[volcano]]es due to its location along the [[Peru-Chile Trench]], a [[subduction|subduction zone]] where the [[Nazca Plate|Nazca]] and [[Antarctic Plate]]s are driven beneath the [[South American Plate]]. Chile has been subject to volcanism since at least late [[Paleozoic]] when subduction along the western margin of [[South America]] began. [[Easter Island]], [[Juan Fernández Islands]] and other oceanic islands of Chile are extinct volcanoes created by [[hotspot (geology)|hotspot]]s. Chile has about 500 volcanoes considered active, 60 of which have had recorded eruptions in the last 450 years.

The National Geology and Mining Service (Spanish: Servicio Nacional de Geología y Minería; SERNAGEOMIN) is a Chilean government agency. Its function is to provide geological information and advice, technical assistance to government, public and private interests, and to regulate the mining industry in Chile.

The service was formed in 1980 by the combination of the previous Institute of Geological Investigations and the State Mines Service. Its director is appointed by the President of Chile.[1][2]

Since 1974, SERNAGEOMIN has published the scientific journal Andean Geology, formerly the Revista Geológica de Chile.[citation needed]
