Nederland 24 is the collective name for a number of specialty digital television channels from Netherlands Public Broadcasting. It also broadcasts a sample channel of the same name featuring a mix of programming from the other thematic channels.
As of January 1 2009,[citation needed] the Nederland 24 service consisted of twelve channels; originally, it consisted of seventeen channels.[citation needed] The channels are available to watch in the Netherlands on digital cable and online (cf. [1]), and four of the television channels are also available via digital satellite.[clarification needed]
Overview
The Nederland 24 channels are an extension of the Netherlands Public Broadcasting, where public broadcasting organisations provide general programming. Based on the amount of active members, broadcasting associations receive air time on three public terrestrial television networks (Nederland 1, Nederland 2 and Nederland 3) as well as on seven radio stations.
The thematic channels offers these broadcasting associations more air time to expand its core programming. It also gives an opportunity to better target a specific portion of the public audience. These channels broadcast round-the-clock, all day, hence the "24" part of the name.
History
The first step towards Nederland 24 was made by the VPRO broadcasting association in May 2003 with the introduction of 3VOOR12TV. The success of this theme channel led to the launch of 3VOOR12 Central, 3VOOR12 On Stage, Journaal 24, and Holland Doc channels in December 2004 and /Geschiedenis in February 2005. The name Nederland 4 first emerged with the start of the internet portal Nederland4.nl on 6 April 2005 as an umbrella for all the theme channels.
As of November 2006 Netherlands Public Broadcasting started with the extension of the number of channels to 17, since then the offer shrunk to 12 by January 2009. The Nederland-e, DNTV, 3VOOR12 Central, and 3VOOR12 On Stage channels where cancelled and /Geloven and Omega TV combined into Spirit 24. On 15 April 2009 the Nederland 4 branding changed to Nederland 24, with the names of the theme channels also changed to include the "24" prefix, except 101 TV.
On January 2009 it was announced that the political channel Politiek 24 would change into a sport/politics channel. Opvoeden doe je zo! will change to Z@ppelin 24, a child and parent channel.
