Introduction
History
The Maison Devambez was founded in 1827, more than a hundred years ago. Here we see the spirit of flexibility and adaptability which enables some of the oldest firms to keep abreast of the times. At first it devoted itself exclusively to copper-plate printing. In 1870 it was taken over by M. Devambez who gave its name. Talented both as artist and workman he was strongly influenced by the traditions of engravers and illuminators of the past. His house specialised more and more in copper-plate work, producing cards, invitations, menus, book-plate, etc., but it did not hesitate to enter upon work more commercial in character when desired by clients to do so. Its reputation increased and it gradually extended its field of action.
Since 1895 it has produced important official work such as invitations, menus and programmes for the President of the Republic and its minsters, for the receptions of the city of paris, for the centenary of Victor Hugo and of Michelet ; it brought out the traditional Livre d'Or for most great events : the Golden Book of the King of Spain 's Visit, of the King of England's Visit, the Golden Book of the Pasteur Institute, of the Red Cross, etc.
