Makkot (Hebrew: מכות, lashes) is a book of the Mishnah and Talmud. It is the fifth volume of the book of Nezikin. Makkot deals primarily with laws of Jewish courts and the punishments which they may administer.
Included in its scope are the topics of:
- Collusive Witnesses (edim zomemim)
- Exile to a "city of refuge" (P. urai miklat S. eer miklat)
- Court-administered lashes (malkus)
There is a disagreement between rebbi yehudah and the chachomim (sages) as to the maximum amount of lashes a person gets. rebbi yehudah says the maximum is 40 and the chachomim say that the maximum is 39. We don't want to kill the peson that is getting wipped so doctors evaluate how much a person can take (in multiples of three).
