SpewSpewNet became a nickname for UUNET after it had been sold and resold during the onset of the dot.com bubble and became the preferred home for spammers, whether for Usenet, e-mail or for bulletproof hosting of spamvertized web pages.

Background

UUNET started with a loan from Usenix and controlled the e-mail addresses for moderated Usenet groups. As such, it was hard to block Usenet from and/or e-mail traffic to it.

UDP

In 1997, UUNET had lost so much credit that on 1997-08-01 a Usenet death penalty (UDP) was issued against it, after finding alternate routes for moderated newsgroups [1]. After a week the UDP was lifted [2].

SueSueNet

In 1998 UUNET threatened legal action[3] for hosting a GIF with "SPAMUNET" on it.

Accounting fraud

In 2002, the owner of UUNET at that time (MCI Inc.) filed for the largest Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in history.

Verizon

On 2007-06-08 UUNET was owned by Verizon. It still was the ISP hosting the most spammers[4] at that time. Note that it had "only" 65 listings (down from more than 200 when it had just bought the remnants of MCI).
