Saintongeais dialect

Saintongeais (patouê saintonjhouê, jhabrail) is a a language spoken halfway down the western coast of France in the former provinces of Saintonge, Aunis and Angoumois, all of which have been incorporated into the current départements of Charente and Charente-Maritime as well as in parts of their neighbouring départements of Deux-Sèvres, Vendée and Gironde. There are words common to both Charentes, a linguistic unity, but many variations either term pronunciation.
The Saintongeais significantly influenced the Québécois, the Acadian and Cajun.

Presentation

We call Saintongeais (patouê saintonjhouê, jhabrail) Patois Charentais spoken in the former provinces d'Aunis, Saintonge and Angoumois.
Its area covers the entire department of Charente-Maritime, west and the center of the department of Charente, the northern department of Gironde Gabaye with his country and its enclaves around Saintonge, Monségur; is also concerned that part aunisienne (south Vendée) and Saintongeaise (south Deux-Sèvres) Marais Poitevin.

The great promoter of charentais was speaking at the beginning of the twentieth century "Saintongese Bard" Goulebenéze, relayed by Odette Comandon, author of comedy and folk tales, actress and storyteller patoisante.
