History
The Mud Hens are actually the second top-level minor league team to play in Toledo. The first debuted in 1896, and played at Bay View Park. The park was located near marshland inhabited by American Coots, also known as "mud hens." For this reason, the local press soon dubbed the team the "Mud Hens"--a nickname that has stuck to Toledo baseball teams for all but a few years since. After only one year, though, the team moved to Armory Park.

The Mud Hens were a charter member of the American Association in 1902. With the AA's stability, the Mud Hens moved to Swayne Field in 1909, which would be the home of baseball in Toledo for almost half a century.

By 1914, the Mud Hens had been purchased by Charles Somers, who also owned the Cleveland Indians. Somers moved the Mud Hens to Cleveland for the 1914 and 1915 seasons. Somers was concerned about the threat posed by the Federal League, and decided to lock the upstart league out of Cleveland by ensuring there was a game nearly every day at League Park. The team returned to Toledo in 1916 as the "Iron Men," but became the Mud Hens again in 1919.

For the better part of the next four decades, the Mud Hens were fixtures in the AA's second division. Their only pennant came in 1927, with Casey Stengel as manager.

After years of sagging attendance, the Mud Hens finally bottomed out in the early 1950s. Out of desperation, the franchise moved to Charleston, West Virginia on June 23, 1952 as the Charleston Senators. For the next season, however, the Milwaukee Brewers moved to Toledo after being displaced by the move of their parent team, the Boston Braves, to Milwaukee. This new team, the Toledo Sox, was loaded with talent, and won Toledo's second-ever pennant in their first season as the Sox. Much of that team would help the major-league Braves win two consecutive pennants in 1957 and 1958 and a World Series in 1957. After only three seasons, however, the Sox moved to Wichita, Kansas as the Wichita Braves.

Toledo was without baseball for the next nine years. However, in 1964, Lucas County commissioner Ned Skeldon led an effort to remodel the Lucas County Fairgrounds stadium in nearby Maumee into a suitable minor league ballpark. The Yankees moved their top affiliate, the Richmond Virginians of the International League, to Toledo for the 1965 season and revived the Mud Hens name.
