His name is Palanivel Rajan spelt Palanivel not Palianivel as in P. T. R. Palianivel Rajan.Secondly his father was P. T. Rajan who also a ex chief minister which could led to confusion and in the press and media he is known as Palanivel Rajan hence redirected the page to Palanivel Rajan. thanks Harlowraman

The Wikipedia 1.0 Assessment statistics for India related articles show there are 51 Featured Articles, 5 Class-A articles, 16 Good Articles, 101 Class-B articles, 167 Start-Class articles and more than 4000 Stubs. There were more than 10000 unassessed articles related to India.

What's New?

Indian Administrators: There are 21 Indian Administrators in Wikipedia at the last count. The recent Wikipedians to be successful at RFA were Lostintherush and Shyam Bihari.
Featured Articles: West Bengal (nom) and Syed Ahmed Khan (nom) were the last two articles from our WikiProject that were granted FA status.

This would be our first full-fledged edition of our Newsletter, and we'd like to start by saying we are very happy to have you among us. This is your newsletter, and we want you to be part of it as well. Provide us with news tips here. It can be anything related to the project, from discussions to calls for help, and other interesting stuff within our community. If you have received or given any barnstars recently, do let us know. Advertisements for recruitments within your WikiProject sub-groups are also welcome. We'll run special sections, and recurring columns in the coming issues.

Cartography Department (Shortcut:WP:INMAP): The Department of Cartography within the WikiProject India is a group of wikipedians who work on providing quality maps related to India. Their contributions gain more significance as we try to provide more information on places, districts and states of India. As a thumb rule, maps serve better if they are in SVG format. The location maps by the cartography department has helped us include location information based on latitudes and longitudes for a give place within India. The Indian Roadways map is a featured image, one amongst the few best road maps in the world. Still, there is more work to be done. There are 604 districts in India (see List of districts of India), and each district page needs a map of that district. You can help too. Contact the Cartography Department to learn how you can help in making the best maps in Wikipedia to be India-related!

Re:help needed regarding images

The following is my understanding of the image copyright policy here. Anyone else reading this message, please feel free to correct any discrepancies.

"For famous personality, in the absence of a free-alternative, you could use one fair-use picture in an article (stamps are not allowed)."

So you can take a picture on the internet, and upload it as fair-use with rationale on English Wikipedia. Uploading it as anything else is a copyright violation and the image will get deleted. For example Image:M karunanidhi 20060526.jpg,

In the above, the rationale is explained with the use of a template since we have thousands of photos taken from the Indian state or central government pages. The same can be done with any other source, by explaining the rationale in plain text like in Image:Ritwik ghatak.jpg.

* it is a historically significant photo of a famous individual, 
* in the absence of a free alternative, 
* the image is low resolution and of no larger and of no higher quality than is necessary for the illustration of an article, and the use of the image on Wikipedia is not expected to decrease the value of the copyright, 
* its inclusion in the article adds significantly to the articles

When uploading a image, leave the license combo box as None. After the upload is complete, edit the image page and add the full text (summary, licensing and rationale). I would stick to 1 fair-use picture per article.

So for all copyrighted pictures, use fairusein templates and add a fairuse rationale. For fair-use images, I wouldn't mind if someone comes by, feels fair-use does not apply and deletes the image. I usually do not contest those. But if you do all the above, there a fair-chance of the image staying.

You should treat any image that is not explicitly released per GDFL/creative commons, as a copyrighted image.

Pictures on the internet that have been released under GDFL/creative commons can be uploaded to Commons so that other language Wikipedias can use the same.

As soon as a free-image is available, the fair-use image must be deleted.
