Category:Marxist journals

Hi, I see you created this category, but it mixes some very different publications: magazines and academic journals. We have different category trees for the two and your cat kind of messes that up. Would it be acceptable to rename it to "Marxist periodicals"? Alternatively, you could rename it to "Marxist magazines" and remove the academic journals. Creation of categories

Hi,

I have seen alot of category creations by you, and would like to say good work, the category system does need articulating in many respects. Just a suggestion however that you discuss a class of categories before creating them to allow others to suggest different names etc. Im not sure where the appropiate place to do this is though, as many projects ignore category suggestions, but let me know if you find one!

Ban from automatically modifying categories

Hello Stefanomione, with this edit, in enacting a consensus of the community reached at the Administrator's Noticeboard, I hereby inform you that:

a.) You are banned from using any gadgets or other automated tools (hotcat in particular) to modify categories in any way. This includes, but is not limited only to, creating a category page, adding pages to a category, changing a page from one category to another, etc. This restriction may be lifted in the future IF you have shown to be consistently following the second restriction (b, below) over a decent period of time, absolutely no less than 3 months (with at least 6 months being preferrable).

b.) Also that if any (presumably manually done, per the restriction above) category creation or modification done by you is contested, you must stop and discuss, gaining a consensus before continuing, per WP:BRD.

Violation of these restrictions may result in being blocked.

You appear to be depopulating the pre-existing Category:Psychoanalytic theory in favour of your own newly created Category:Psychoanalytic terminology, with the edit summary "refine category." Why can't theoretical concepts exist in both categories? And should they not? On what basis have you decided that these articles should be diffused to your preferred category? • In my opinion, those theoretical concepts shouldn't exist in eleven categories: Category:Psychoanalytic theory, Category:Psychoanalysis, Category:Freudian psychology, Category:Sigmund Freud, Category:Jacques Lacan, Category:Gilles Deleuze, Category:Félix Guattari Category:Relational psychoanalysis, Category:Psychodynamics and even in Category:Postmodern theory and Category:Structuralism. That is why I concentrate them in one category. An example: the page The Imaginary (psychoanalysis) placed in Category:Postmodern theory and in Category:Structuralism. Listing rebellions that took place in specific regions (not countries), the way people/culture is listed in Category:ethnic groups by region or Category:Culture by region. Can you be more specific about what the category would look like if it was "perfect" and had every appropriate revolt and subcategories & such? Is it specifically for "revolts which happen to have a region mentioned in their name" or "revolts that crossed national boundaries and aren't easily classified?" Because as it stands, it's a hodgepodge of random rebellions across the entire world, so it really just means "Revolts." The categories you link to aren't really the same; they are high-parent categories of "Xs by continent" with a few other options (like in Culture, which covers Art / Music / Dance etc. by a more specific subcategory). This appears to be a low-level "actually includes specific revolts" category, except that every revolt happened in a "region," loosely defined. SnowFire (talk) 22:55, 4 April 2012 (UTC)

Yeah, I don't really see the use. Many of the revolts don't really qualify - Catalan Revolt and Revolt of the Barretinas took place in Catalonia, and while somewhat involving France, should easily be part of Spanish Revolutions. Telangana Rebellion is part of Indian rebellions. Even when a revolt does cross countries, it can just be part of both countries's revolt subcategories. I'd say deletion / potential merging, except most of these are already in the proper categories already. SnowFire (talk) 23:14, 4 April 2012 (UTC)

Category deletions

Please do not nominate categories for speedy deletion in the way that you have been doing. There is no criterion for speedy deletion that covers these sorts of nominations. There are two courses of action that follow protocol. One is to nominate the category for deletion under CFD, where it would likely be uncontroversial. The other, and probably more what you're looking for, is to nominate for speedy deletion under criterion C1, for empty categories. There is a four-day waiting period attached to this criterion, so deletion will not be immediate. But that is the proper protocol to follow for category deletions. Just as a general comment, there are way too many categories in WP. Some articles have almost a page full of categories. Too many categories are simply an exercise in programing and are not needed. 1) Some novels about advertising (Tom Wolfe, ...), public relations (Kurt Vonnegut, ...) ... But it seems not all novels have their articles yet ... 2) We have 'Novels about filmmaking' and 'Novels about actors/film producers/script writers' ... They are sub-categories, not redundant ones. Similarly, we could have 'Novels about journalism' (= about the mechanics of the "industry", written by such French authors as Zola and Balzac) AND 'Novels about journalists' (= about the people, not the mechanics). 'Hollywood novels' = about the industry, 'Novels about actors' = about the people working in it. Let me demonstrate it to you in the next days, adding more articles. And also, PLEASE exercise a little restraint on those parent cats. I just removed TWO redundant parent cats that you added to Category:Novels about war correspondents. And concerning Category:Journals about philosophers, that category name is not really appropriate. Strictly speaking, these journals are not about the persons, but about their thinking. Abstractly speaking, what should be the difference between Category:Nazi journals and Category:Journals about Nazism: the first one is edited 'for' an ideology, the second is 'about' an ideology. Concerning the philosophers: we can have biographical books, novels, short stories, films, documentary films and periodicals (magazines and journals) about writers and philosophers. Stefanomione. Sorry, but that distinction between "for" and "about" is way too subtle. Most journals will fall somewhere in between. As for the biographical works, yes, of course we can have cats about writers. That is exactly the point here: the cat you created is no about journals that discuss the life of some philosophers. It's about journals that investigate a certain school of thought. It's a subtle but essential distinction: works written 'for' an ideology are categorized in Category:Works by ideology, works 'about' ideologies are (evidently) placed in Category:Works about ideologies. In my opinion, a work can never "fall somewhere in between" - Just consider the adopted point of view: polemic or scientific. Concerning the philosophers: I agree, Category:Journals about philosophers and there works and thought is more suitable. You're talking about journals, which consist of issues filled with multiple articles. I can very well imagine a journal publishing both articles about an ideology and for an ideology and, hence, falling in between. Having unclear cats like this will just lead to people more or less randomly assigning articles to one or the other cat. As for the philosophers, are you just being obtuse or are you really not getting the point? Those journals are not about the philosophers, they are about a school of thought. There's a whole world of difference. Philosophers are just a different kind of beast from film directors, just as academic journals are very different from magazines. --Randykitty (talk) 21:41, 6 September 2013 (UTC)

A journal falling in between can be placed in both categories - we don't have to abolish structures that fit for 80-90 % of the articles. Undoubtedly, most journals have hagiography sections, so they are about the philosophers and the school of thought they created - the man and his time/school are intertwined (e.g. no Nietzsche without his abhorring of religion and personal subjugation, no Marx without 19-century German industrial life, ...). As for the comparison philosophers vs film directors ... most French directors adopt a (philosophical/ideological) worldview: Nouvelle Vague, French Impressionist Cinema, ... But we don't have to rename to Category:Works about film directors and producers and their thought. I understand your point: most categories are not accurately named for reasons of implicit meaning/understanding - so what do you propose for the ones above ?
