Please remember to be careful with minor edits / language changes

Hi Colman2000, some time ago you were asked to be careful when you make language corrections to articles. I'd like to ask you again to take greater care – quite a few of the edits you have made with the edit summary "corrections" recently were changes from one acceptable phrasing to another acceptable phrasing (thus not a correction) or, more concerning, changes from correct to incorrect phrasing. In this edit, for instance, there are multiple issues, including changes from "which" to "that" which violated WP:ENGVAR; changes from "a number of" to "several" where "several" made no sense; and changes of "more arid" to the unidiomatic "arider". Again, if you use a grammar checking tool, you have to go through every single change the tool suggests, and only accept the ones that are improvements. In almost very case, most of the tool's suggestions will not be improvements and should not be accepted. Regards, --bonadea contributions talk 12:33, 29 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Bonadea: I apologize for my mistake. Yes, I do use a grammar-checking tool and sometimes I do not read the sentence to make sure it makes sense. With that said, I will take your advice into consideration. Colman2000 (talk) 17:03, 29 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

January 2024

Your addition to Cavazos, Texas has been removed or altered, as it appears to closely paraphrase a copyrighted source. Limited close paraphrasing or quotation is appropriate within reason, so long as the material is clearly attributed in the text. However, longer paraphrases which are not attributed to their source may constitute copyright violation or plagiarism, and are not acceptable on Wikipedia. Such content cannot be hosted here for legal reasons; please do not post it on any page, even if you plan to fix it later. You may use external websites or printed material as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words.

If you own the copyright to the text, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use it — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. If you are not the owner of the copyright but have permission from that owner, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing. As with many other pages, your creation of Cavazos, Texas has very close paraphrasing of the Handbook of Texas site. Please take care to write your own articles, not just closely follow other copyrighted pages. Fram (talk) 10:42, 3 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You have been blocked indefinitely from editing for violating copyright policy by copying text or images into Wikipedia from another source without evidence of permission, as you did at Kensing, Texas. Please take this opportunity to ensure that you understand our copyright policy and our policies regarding how to use non-free content.
If you think there are good reasons for being unblocked, please review Wikipedia's guide to appealing blocks, then add the following text to the bottom of your talk page: {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}.   — Diannaa (talk) 22:39, 30 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

For example: Kensing, Texas that you created today, in spite of all these warnings, a CCI being requested, and a report at ANI has the same content in the same order as https://tshaonline.org/handbook/online/articles/hnk10. It uses only slightly different wording. This is a violation of our copyright policy. If you think there are good reasons for you to be unblocked, please follow the instructions above. — Diannaa (talk) 22:43, 30 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This user's unblock request has been reviewed by an administrator, who declined the request. Other administrators may also review this block, but should not override the decision without good reason (see the blocking policy).

Colman2000 (block logactive blocksglobal blockscontribsdeleted contribsfilter logcreation logchange block settingsunblockcheckuser (log))

Request reason:

After reading Wikipedia's copyright and non-free content policies, I understand why I have been blocked and acknowledge that this is an issue. First of all, the Handbook of Texas does have a Terms of Use policy. On the website, it says "Educators in all settings may download and print these materials as instructional resources under "fair use" guidelines. Printed copies may be distributed to teachers and other individuals provided that proper credit is given to the Texas State Historical Association." see here. As such, there is a contact form and an address to write to the Texas Historical Association to get permission to use these sources, so I will leave them a message to get permission from them. Second, I have taken the time to read Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing and read that changing a few words and slightly reordering phrases is not enough to constitute a paraphrase. Thus, this could be considered plagiarism, which is a big no-no on Wikipedia. I have been using this website to try and paraphrase the text to the best of my ability, but now I am starting to reconsider using this website. It is not my intention to infringe any content from the Handbook of Texas, per Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing#Notice to the contributor. Therefore, if I am unblocked, I promise to be more careful with the way I paraphrase content and continue reading the close paraphrasing guidelines more often to ensure I write acceptable content in my own words. I will take notes, write a draft, and review it, and if I have any questions, I will go to the Teahouse or the help desk to get insight on my edits. I will also bring in other sources to help ensure that there's a good understanding of the topic and a neutral point of view and bring together information from two sources (such as Texas Escapes Magazine), without maintaining the previous sentence structure or style. Yes, I admit that I have not commented on the warnings, CCI page, or ANI report about this content, but I will respond to them as soon as possible. Colman2000 (talk) 03:58, 31 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Decline reason:

I'd like to see the commitment described below, as well as a better understanding of Wikipedia's copyright(which the Texas Historical Association may not want to release text under, I wouldn't if I were them). 331dot (talk) 08:05, 31 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

I hope you don't mind my saying this, but the site you linked is, essentially, an text spinner. This is a bad idea anyway; such sites often produce deeply unnatural sounding, and even sometimes inaccurate, sounding text. But, ultimately, these websites are designed to plagiarize content. I can't speak for any admins, but an unblock would require a commitment to not use any article-spinner or large language models to write articles. GreenLipstickLesbian (talk) 07:46, 31 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This user's unblock request has been reviewed by an administrator, who accepted the request.

Colman2000 (block logactive blocksglobal blockscontribsdeleted contribsfilter logcreation logchange block settingsunblockcheckuser (log))

Request reason:

I have taken the whole day to read the copyright and non-free content policies, and I feel that I understand it better now. The policy for copyright says "The text of Wikipedia is copyrighted (automatically, under the Berne Convention) by Wikipedia editors and contributors and is formally licensed to the public under one or several liberal licenses." With that said, if I am unblocked, I will make a commitment to not use any article spinners or large-language models, such as any paraphrasing tools or QuillBot, as websites like these are designed to plagiarize content and sometimes make them sound unnatural or inaccurate. I will also make a commitment to read the close paraphrasing guidelines more often and try and paraphrase to the best of my ability. It may be difficult, but if I have any questions, I will go to either the Teahouse or the help desk to get insight on any drafts I make before I publish those changes or create an article. I will also use my sandbox, as well. There are lots of articles on Texas cities and towns on Wikipedia that cite the Handbook of Texas as a reference, which uses fair use guidelines. If I understand correctly, I believe it is a tertiary source on Wikipedia. Some have been created by other editors and they use the Handbook of Texas as an external link rather than a reference. Therefore, I will cite the author of any article (if there is one) and the Texas State Historical Association as I am citing. Colman2000 (talk) 03:25, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Accept reason:

You now have a much better understanding of how copyright and fair use apply to Wikipedia. So I am unblocking your account. I will be monitoring your contribs for a while. Welcome back. — Diannaa (talk) 22:26, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

|@Diannaa: Thank you. Colman2000 (talk) 22:33, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

A couple points. Please read and confirm that you understand the following:

  • Copyright content is not allowed anywhere on Wikipedia, not even in sandboxes or drafts.
  • Wikipedia has a very strict copyright policy, stricter in some ways than copyright law itself, because our fair use content guideline does not allow us to copy or closely paraphrase material from copyright sources when there's a freely licensed alternative available. In this case the freely licensed material is prose that we write ourselves. You must put all information in your own words and structure. It's more appropriate to summarize the content in your own words than to try to paraphrase, especially if you only have one source available. Don't try to include every single detail. This will typically result in version being much shorter than the source document. — Diannaa (talk) 14:09, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Diannaa: Yes, I can confirm that I can understand the points you explained here. Thank you. Colman2000 (talk) 15:19, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Your addition to Finger, North Carolina is not very good. It has the same problem for which you got blocked: too-close paraphrasing. You cover the same points, rearranged the content a bit, and substituted a few words. That's not okay. If you are not able to write your own content, you won't be able to edit here, so sorry.

This particular source is public domain, so I am going to add the required attribution template {{source-attribution}} and leave the content in place. — Diannaa (talk) 14:01, 2 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

A page that might assist

Hi Colman2000, I stumbled in here and realized that a guide I recently found might be helpful for you - it's been great for me as I start work on my first drafts. How to mine a source is the guide in question. tl;dr, it describes how to get the maximum amount of information from a source without paraphrasing or plagiarizing in any way. The process is laid out clearly with an example source and in my opinion makes it much easier to break down information and put the facts back together in your own words. I hope this might be as useful to you as it has been to me, and wish you happy editing! StartGrammarTime (talk) 07:33, 3 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@StartGrammarTime: Thank you so much! I will definitely take a look! Colman2000 (talk) 15:24, 3 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I understand you don't remember every article you've created, but as you're more familiar with this subject area, could you please tell where you got the information under "Education" from and cite it? Thanks, NotAGenious (talk) 12:38, 5 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@NotAGenious: Hi. I got it from the GreatSchools school district boundaries map. The Handbook of Texas can also show what school district the community is served by. Colman2000 (talk) 15:18, 5 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Understood. Could you provide a link for where you got the data for Summers Mill, Texas? NotAGenious (talk) 13:49, 6 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@NotAGenious: Same exact website. Colman2000 (talk) 15:57, 6 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
For me, typing in the search field the database doesn't recognize Summers nor Sommers Mill. NotAGenious (talk) 16:34, 6 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@NotAGenious: Sometimes I like to look at the exact location on HomeTownLocator or GNIS and click on its location in the database. Colman2000 (talk) 16:48, 6 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Something like https://www.greatschools.org/school-district-boundaries-map/?districtId=138&level=e&schoolId=750&state=TX? NotAGenious (talk) 08:03, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@NotAGenious: Kind of... Go to hometownlocator.com and click on the link to the location of Summers Mill in Bell County, then look at the map to see its precise location. When you go back to the GreatSchools boundaries map, look for it, and then click on it. That is what I meant. Colman2000 (talk) 15:36, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Rattan

Hi again! As promised, I've spent some time messing around with the source you provided. Unfortunately I really don't think we can do much with just that one reference - it's a great reference, with concise info, well laid-out, but the problem is that without other sources no matter what I do it's effectively close paraphrasing. If there were other sources we could bring the information together, flesh bits out - like I'd love to be able to add names of some of the first residents, or why the mill and gin were the first buildings, whether 350 residents was a big jump in numbers and whether that was considered a good-sized town at the time...you know what I mean? Without other things to add I just don't see any way to avoid basically rewriting the source but with slightly different wording. I can make lists of the information in the source, but it's absolutely vital to be able to work with another source (or two, or three...) to find and fill in the gaps.

I'm very sorry I couldn't be of more help. If you do end up with a draft with more sources, please feel free to come chat again - I enjoy being able to practice! StartGrammarTime (talk) 05:59, 6 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@StartGrammarTime: Understood. For now, I will cool it with the Texas community articles and focus on something else. In the meantime, there is some information on two communities named Vasco and Yowell in the Handbook of Texas and Texas Escapes Magazine. How should I use what you described for these communities in these two sources? Colman2000 (talk) 06:09, 6 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
