Philippe Quint, 34, is a Russian-born American violinist and Grammy Award nominee who frequently performs works by William Schuman, Lukas Foss, Leonard Bernstein, Ned Rorem, John Corigliano, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, and Lera Auerbach. His debut album, William Schuman’s Violin Concerto received two Grammy Award nominations including Best Soloist - with Orchestra. Quint, an immigrant, left Russia in 1991 to become a U.S. citizen[1].

Loss and return of violin

Quint plays the irreplaceable 1723 Kiesewetter violin, made by Antonio Stradivari. The instrument is on loan to him from philanthropists Clement and Karen Arrison, of Buffalo, N.Y. Quint lost the Kiesewetter for a short period in April 2008, when he left it in the back seat of a Newark, New Jersey taxi cab. The violin, valued at $4 million, was returned to him the next day by the driver, an Egyptian American named Mohamed Khalil, after sitting in the back seat of the cab, parked on a Newark, NJ street[2]. He gave the driver $100 and played a private 30-minute performance for Mr. Khalil on May 6, 2008, in the cab waiting area at Newark Liberty International Airport; Khalil also received a medal from the city of Newark[3].
