Russia lost [[Kars]], [[Ardahan]] and [[Batum]] by the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk on March 3, 1918. The Turkish army took control in [[Kars]] on April 25, 1918 making Kars their regional capital.

Turkish occupation forces engaged in heavy fighting with Armenians, with heavy losses amongst civilian population. The turks conducted plebiscite on incorporation of Batumi and Ardahan into Turkey, results of which were heavily disputed. On Sept 27, 1918 Muslim Commitee was formed in Kars, which advocated an autonomy or independence of the territory along the lines of [[Azerbaijan Democratic Republic]]

The Democratic Republic of South West Caucasus (Dec 1,1918 -Jan 1919) was nominally independent entity created after the fall of Tsarist and Ottoman empires on the territory of modern Turkey (vilayets of Kars and Ardahan), Armenia and Georgia.


Background

Russia lost Kars, Ardahan and Batum by the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk on March 3, 1918. The Turkish army took control in Kars on April 25, 1918 making Kars their regional capital.

Turkish occupation forces engaged in heavy fighting with Armenians, with heavy losses amongst civilian population. The turks conducted plebiscite on incorporation of Batumi and Ardahan into Turkey, results of which were heavily disputed.
