Revision as of 11:01, 15 March 2013

To report an error in content currently or imminently on the Main Page, use the appropriate section below.

  • Where is the error? An exact quotation of the text in question helps.
  • Offer a correction if possible.
  • References are helpful, especially when reporting an obscure factual or grammatical error.
  • Time zones. The Main Page runs on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC, currently 07:23 on 16 August 2024) and is not adjusted to your local time zone.
  • Can you resolve the problem yourself? If the error lies primarily in the content of an article linked from the Main Page, fix the problem there before reporting it here. Text on the Main Page generally defers to the articles with bolded links. Upcoming content on the Main Page is usually only protected from editing beginning 24 hours before its scheduled appearance. Before that period, you can be bold and fix any issues yourself.
  • Do not use {{edit fully-protected}} on this page, which will not get a faster response. It is unnecessary, because this page is not protected, and causes display problems because this is not a talk page. (See the bottom of this revision for an example.)
  • No chit-chat. Lengthy discussions should be moved to a suitable location elsewhere, such as the talk page of the relevant article or project.
  • Respect other editors. Another user wrote the text you want changed, or reported an issue they see in something you wrote. Everyone's goal should be producing the best Main Page possible. The compressed time frame of the Main Page means sometimes action must be taken before there has been time for everyone to comment. Be civil to fellow users.
  • Reports are removed when resolved. Once an error has been addressed or determined not to be an error, or the item has been rotated off the Main Page, the report will be removed from this page. Check the revision history for a record of any discussion or action taken; no archives are kept.

Hungarian Revolution of 1848

Where is Hungary's national day (Hungarian Revolution of 1848) in the On this day... section? Shame! --Norden1990 (talk) 00:03, 15 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The omission is intentional. Hungarian Revolution of 1848 contains a {{refimprove}} tag and Hungary contains an {{out of date}} tag, so both articles are ineligible to be bold-linked. —David Levy 00:51, 15 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The article of Hōnen Matsuri has no citations. So, an irrelevant, trascurabile Japanese festival more important than one of the greatest national holidays in Hungary. Congratulations to the Wikipedia... --Norden1990 (talk) 00:58, 15 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
There's no need to debate whose national day is "more important". Such opinions have nothing to do with this. (I hope that you won't accuse me of anti-Hungary bias. For the record, I'm partially of Hungarian descent.)
No one had questioned the Hōnen Matsuri article's inclusion or brought its issues to our attention. We look for maintenance tags, which Hōnen Matsuri lacked until you just inserted one. We generally consider articles with orange-level tags ineligible for inclusion, but in this instance, the problems certainly seem sufficiently severe. So I've removed the Hōnen Matsuri link. —David Levy 01:59, 15 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Anyway don't matter what you say, in 2012, Hungarian Revolution of 1956 (also a national day) was not part of the On that day... section, despite the fact that is a featured article. --Norden1990 (talk) 01:07, 15 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
That appears to have been an oversight (which would have been corrected if someone had reported it here). At Wikipedia:Selected anniversaries/October 23, National Day is listed with Hungary as the bold-linked article, so it was deemed ineligible. An item in which Hungarian Revolution of 1956 is bold-linked is queued as eligible, but it wasn't used. However, that article was linked (albeit not in bold) on June 16. —David Levy 01:59, 15 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Norden has a point here; it's fairly silly to have an article with like 40 inline references left off the main page because someone tagged one section for insufficient references, while a pseudo stub with 2 non-inline references, and possible reliable source issues, has no problem. I think we need to look at our rules of thumb for what can and can't be put on the main page in this section. I have to go now, but will look at this later tonight if no one else has, to see if those maintenance tags on the two Hungarian pages are even reasonable. I think it should be added to OTD. --Floquenbeam (talk) 01:17, 15 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that the Hōnen Matsuri link shouldn't appear (and I've removed it). I also agree that it would be reasonable to rethink the rule (which I'm merely following, not endorsing). But unless the maintenance tags are removed from Hungarian Revolution of 1848 and Hungary (either because they're uncalled-for or because the issues are rectified), I see no reason to make an exception. We should either abide by the rule or change it. —David Levy 01:59, 15 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I expanded the Hungarian Revolution of 1848 article with some citations. Anyway the refimprove template was add by User:Howcheng on 14 March, who responsible for the selected anniversaries sections of the Main Page. --Norden1990 (talk) 02:43, 15 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for fixing the article. It's now listed. howcheng {chat} 02:52, 15 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much! --Norden1990 (talk) 02:57, 15 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Kharki/Kharkov

Can some administrator please change Kharkov into Kharkiv in today's "On this day..."(to reflect common English usage & for consistency within this article + others + the Wikipedia article on Kharkiv; the city is called Kharkiv in todays common English hence it should also be referred to as Kharkiv on Wikipedia's main page). — Yulia Romero • Talk to me! 02:03, 15 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

What was the city commonly called in 1943? The bold-linked article is titled "Third Battle of Kharkov". —David Levy 02:11, 15 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Is it relevant what the city was called in 1943... We are not in 1943 are we? Wikipedia:Naming conventions (geographic names) clearly states "Use modern English names for titles and in articles". These days Kharkiv is used (see here and here). — Yulia Romero • Talk to me! 02:20, 15 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

But it seems the city was commonly called Kharkov in 1943. — Yulia Romero • Talk to me! 02:24, 15 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Then it is relevant, as the battle would likely be known as the "Battle of Kharkov" rather than "Battle of Kharkiv" (the second paragraph of WP:MODERNPLACENAME has some details and examples). If that is the case, it's best to have the link to the city article as Kharkov as well for consistency. Chamal TC 02:36, 15 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
