Finding a source

Tips for finding a source yourself

Main page: WP:Find your source
  • Send a request to the author(s) of research papers for a copy of their paper by email.
  • Check what sources are available to you in The Wikipedia Library – editors active for at least six months with over 500 edits, at least 10 of them in the last month, and with no active blocks have immediate access to the Wikipedia Library Bundle.
    • Available databases in the bundle include: Gale, EBSCO, JSTOR, Oxford and ProQuest
  • Consider applying for access to additional Wikipedia Library sources at The Wikipedia Library Card Platform.
    • Additional databases include: Newspapers.com, NewspaperARCHIVE.com, Project MUSE, Taylor & Francis and much more.
  • Search for periodical titles in the Wikipedia Library database index at The Wikipedia Library/A–Z.
  • Check on Google Books, or your local library or national library may be able to obtain it through an interlibrary loan or subscription.
  • Search Google Scholar for archived copies of journals in institutional repositories.
  • Check whether your alma mater's library offers electronic document delivery services for alumni, if applicable.
  • If the article is paywalled, a browser extension may bypass the paywall. Try Unpaywall for academic journals or Bypass Paywalls Clean (Firefox, Chrome) for news websites.

Note that sites like Library Genesis (LibGen) and Sci-Hub offer direct, free access to a large range of publications, but there are legal questions around their use and neither the Wikimedia Foundation nor the Wikipedia community endorses them.

Making a request

  • A request may be an open question or you may ask for a specific journal, article or work.
  • All kinds of sources are possible here: newspapers, magazine article, databases, encyclopedias, court decisions, laws, books, etc.
  • We cannot perform full book copy requests due to copyright. Please ask for specific pages that relate to the article(s) you need them for.
  • You may contact research helpers directly or make a request on this page.
  • To receive email without disclosing your email address publicly, configure your email in Special:Preferences.
  • Provide as much detail as possible: a full citation with author, title, publisher, and date or identifiers like DOI, ISBN, ISSN, PMID, OCLC, etc.
  • Indicate which Wikipedia articles are being improved.
  • Once a request has been fulfilled add the {{Resolved}} template.
  • Filled requests are archived.
  • Requests unfilled after three months will be archived.

Fulfilling a request

  • Anyone may offer advice and fulfill requests.
  • Indicate which part or parts of the request is being handled so others do not duplicate your work.
  • Notify (mention) the requester using {{ping|REQUESTER_USERNAME}}.
  • You can:
    • point to a pre-existing electronic document by giving its URL ( http://... )
    • share scans of pages or documents using a file-sharing service, provided it is legal
    • upload out of copyright works to Wikimedia Commons and/ or Wikisource (but be careful that this does not breach your own institution's policies)
    • email a link or plain text to a requester using the Special:EmailUser feature but for attachments, you need to ask them to mail you first so you can reply.

Hi guys, I'm looking for the Worms game reviews from the magazines listed above (the list will be updated if I find info about other reviews that I need but can't find online). I'm working on the article about Worms in another language section of Wikipedia, and I have reasons to believe that these articles will help me with my research. These particular magazines are nowhere to be found online and not even for sale, and in my country there's no way to request anything from American or British libraries. Hoping you could help me.

@Compassionate727: Actually... If your librarian is willing to search some magazines whithout a specific issue in mind, I would dare to add several such magazines to the list. Hadn't done so at first because I didn't think it was possible at all. If that's okay with you and your librarian, I would definitely appreciate this additional help. Alright, here is where I am at. My librarian has submitted three of the requests. One was to the Library of Congress, who I am told will not respond for a while. There are no lenders for the PSExtreme article; I can't help you there. For PC Power and CD-ROM Games, my librarian says that they will need to ask lenders outside the United States and that they "will take extra time to fill" but that she can pursue it "if these articles are important for your research." I can't be 100% sure that it will turn out very important for my research, but I have reasons to believe it may. These particular two magazines aren't for sale anywhere on eBay, etc, and they're not even in the British libraries that are open for online requests. I can say this is pretty important for me. Article discussing the 1941 Alabama Crimson Tide football team and Alabama's claim of a national title for the year. The article is discussed here but the screenshot now has linkrot.

the article apparently has a quote from Holt Rast that says:

Torrossa is kind of annoying; my library has a subscription but I have to physically be there in person (no proxy), and it doesn't let me download or save or print many of them: "Streaming only | NO download | NO Copy/paste | NO Printing", so I'm not really sure how people can get these to you. That could arguably violate the licence terms for your library, but there isn't much choice in this situation, particularly if you don't have much spare time to spend in the library. Arguably the most important thing would be the section on bats (chiropterans) as I could not track down a single outside publication making note of them at La Brea (despite being recorded from there by the book it seems). GenealogyBank

Looking for someone who might be able to access GenealogyBank to help in the verification of citations in Ray Byars and Tommy Byars. Pretty much all of the citations in both articles are apparently to old newspaper articles found on GenealogyBank, which requires registration to access. I understand this is a bit of an unorthodox request, but there are so many of these citations in both articles, listing them individually would end up being quite a list.

Thank you so much for the reply Firefangledfeathers and my apologies for not responding sooner. I don't think there's any one particular ciation that needs to be examined, it would just be helpful to know whether the GB site works like newspaper.com in which the entire paper is uploaded or whether people are uploading cutouts of newspaper articles. One of the problems is the the person citing GB stated that she might have paraphrased the titles of some articles so that they can be used as citations for different content. For example, Ray Byars#cite_note-10 and Ray Byars#cite_note-12 as well as Ray Byars#cite_note-33, Ray Byars#cite_note-48 and Ray Byars#cite_note-49 may be examples of paraphrasing in which she's actually citing the same articles twice and thrice respectively in those two cases but is trying to cite different parts of the articles for different content. If she's jsut citing the same articles over and over gain, then some cleanup could probably be done per WP:REFNAME. Slippery Rock football (Pennsylvania) 1936/1937 wire service story declaring them national champions

The 1936 Slippery Rock Rockets football team were apparently named as national champions via the transitive property by a sports writer in 1936/1937. The column was then carried across the country by a wireservice.

This 'urban legend" is repeated in many tertiary sources, but without an original source that I can find.

It has to have been written after Nov 21, 1936. Most likely in Dec 1936 or Jan 1937

Pierre Berthelot, Duplessis est encore en vie

The French version of this article says that apparently, while travelling from Quebec City to Schefferville just before his death, Maurice Duplessis stopped on the border of Labrador on the Quebec side and urinated in the general direction of Newfoundland to protest what Quebeckers consider an illegal land grab of (parts of) Labrador by the Newfies (see also Newfoundland and Labrador-Quebec border). A lot of sources listed there are not exactly the ones I would use due to quality concerns, but this one definitely is good. The question I have is whether this source states that this indeed happened or whether it is just an artistic invention of a TV series. The page in this book is unfortunately not given in the article, and I have no idea where this could be. Also, I have doubts about the issue because Conrad Black, who wrote an extensive biography, says that he flew there, so he couldn't have done that mid-air.
