Welcome to WikiProject Women in Red (WiR)!
Our objective is to turn red links into blue ones. Our project's scope is women's representation on all language Wikipedias (biographies, women's works, women's issues, broadly construed). Did you know that, according to Humaniki, only 19.86% of the English Wikipedia's biographies are about women? Not impressed? Content gender gap is a form of systemic bias, and this is what WiR addresses. We invite you to participate, whenever you like, in whatever way suits you and your schedule. Editors of all genders are equally and warmly welcome at Women in Red!

Women in Red has an initiative (established in 2017) for all our participants who are interested in creating or improving articles on women and their works outside the specific focus of our monthly editathons. We have called it #1day1woman as the label can be used worldwide on the social media, creating new trends of interest. Perfectionists might like to create a new article each and every day but one new article on any one day will be the starting point. The approach provides an opportunity for our members and all other participants to create or improve articles on women who are notable in any field of endeavor.

In 2024, in addition to the traditional approach we are introducing a new variant for those who think they can add one biography a week. Virtual recognition will be given to those who manage to continue for three months (with at least 13 articles), six months (26 articles), nine months (39 articles) and for the whole of 2024 (52 articles). Participants can of course create and list more than one new biography a week if they wish but everyone should try to create at least one per week. There are no special requirements in regard to article length but contributions should of course meet normal Wikipedia acceptance standards. Those participating should list their contributions in the section below on "One biography a week articles", following the instructions which appear in edit mode.

This virtual edit-a-thon allows enthusiasts from around the globe to participate in the work.

    What else?

    • The lists of redlinks should provide inspiration.

The main goals of the event are:

    • to encourage inexperienced editors and show them how they can contribute to Wikipedia by creating biographies of some of the world's most prominent women
    • to draw the attention of more experienced editors to the need for concerted action in combating the systemic bias against the coverage of women and women's works
    • to promote the new/improved articles and images through social media
