==How to subcategorize Puerto Rico articles==
I have been working on standardizing the subcategories under which Puerto Rico-related articles appear. There was a mix of ways under which Puerto Rico articles were being subcategorized, yet the natural thing to do seemed to be to have a one common systematic way of subcategorizing them. For example, in categories about museums, the subcategory “Category:Museums in Puerto Rico” could had been subcategorized under (1) Category:Museums in insular areas of the United States, (2) Category:Museums in the United States by location, or (3) Category:Museums in the United States by dependent territory, (and perhaps a few others). I chose the first format (''“XYZ in insular areas of the United States”''). It seemed natural: most subcategories of Puerto Rico articles already appeared to be using that format. What do you all think? [[User:Mercy11|Mercy11]] ([[User talk:Mercy11|talk]]) 01:14, 13 April 2023 (UTC)
:Since Puerto Rico is an unincorporated territory of the United States, I agree with the use of the insular area category since it is a fairly common term in the United States to refer to its dependent territories. [[User:Yarfpr|Yarfpr]] ([[User talk:Yarfpr|talk]]) 01:30, 14 April 2023 (UTC)
:It was time someone did this. Thanks Mercy11. "Category:... in insular areas of the United States" is a good bucket and it fills up with other US insular areas, as well. i.e. USVI, and the other less populated ones - the ones no one seems to speak of hardly. Let me know ''if'' you need help with this project and I could try to make some time but I've just been so busy with life. Thanks again. --[[User:The Eloquent Peasant|The Eloquent Peasant]] ([[User talk:The Eloquent Peasant|talk]]) 15:04, 17 April 2023 (UTC)
:{{ping|Mercy11}} The "Foo by / of Insular Areas ..." is a good way to categorize but I saw it's being discussed over [[Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2023 September 19|here]]. I added my .02 with a [[WP:RS]] showing that the [[United States Department of the Interior|US Dept of Interior]] defines '''An Insular Area of the United States''' as "A jurisdiction that is neither a part of one of the several States nor a Federal district. This is the current generic term to refer to any commonwealth, freely associated state, possession or territory or Territory and from July 18, 1947, until October 1, 1994, the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands. :Even though it missed DYK this time it would still be worth you and others interested in the island fixing up the article in the long term I think. Even if you only did maybe 10 or 15 mins a week so long as you did it systematically and noted on the talk page which sections you had fixed someone else would be able to take over if you ran out of time. == Crime notability ==
I was digging around about violent street gangs and the FBI, and found news about an indictment of a group that operated in and around Manati.<ref name="DOJ 2023">{{cite web | title=42 Members of a Violent Gang Charged with Drug Trafficking and Firearms Violations in Manatí, Puerto Rico | website=United States Department of Justice | date=September 22, 2023 | url=https://www.justice.gov/usao-pr/pr/42-members-violent-gang-charged-drug-trafficking-and-firearms-violations-manati-puerto | access-date=September 30, 2023}}</ref> My question is broad- about including a ''crime'' section in some of the (place) articles. It is [[WP:NEWS]] but at some point the topic may be notable enough, right? A lot of WP city articles include a ''Crime'' section. Just sharing my thoughts.

== Parque Cristóbal Colón ==
Hosted by the [[m:Wikimedia Community User Group Uganda|Wikimedia Community User Group Uganda]], the first ever virtual [[m:Wiki Indaba|Wiki Indaba]] conference is taking place online from the 5th to the 7th of November 2021 under the theme Rethink + Reset : Visions of the future.
Age old question? The location of Parque Cristobal Colon. [:File:Aguadilla - Parque de Colon 01.jpg]

It's said to be in Aguadilla, but I think the map shows it's in Aguada.
[[m:WikiIndaba conference 2021|Wiki Indaba 2021]] is a unique opportunity to come together to build the capacity of African Wikimedians both within the continent and the diaspora to foster the growth of the coverage and our involvement in Wikimedia projects.

The [[m:WikiIndaba_conference_2021/Submissions|call for submissions]] is open, please [https://pretalx.com/wiki-indaba-2021/cfp '''submit your session proposal'''] either as a presentation, panel discussion, lightning talk, or workshop before '''September 24th 2021'''.

I did not know and [https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Aguadilla_-_Parque_de_Colon_01.jpg&action=history argued] that it's not in Aguada. After, I thought the place should be listed in both Aguada and Aguadilla. The closer removed the images of the park and the Banyan Tree from the Aguada category in Commons.
Most importantly, we would like to have you at the conference, please '''[https://www.eventbrite.com/e/wiki-indaba-2021-tickets-169597716335 register here to get your free ticket]''' and spread the word to your community members.

Again, according to the map, the park, the tree house, and the monument seem to be in Aguada yet it's always advertised as being in Aguadilla.
Looking forward to seeing you and hearing you speak at the conference.

Why? What? How? When?
[[m:User:Kateregga1|Geoffrey Kateregga]] ([[m:User talk:Kateregga1|talk]]) 23:45, 16 September 2021 (UTC) - On behalf of the Wiki Indaba 2021 Local Organizing Committee

Is it because there is no "road" from Aguada that leads there. It's actually a road from Aguadilla that leads to the area with the tree house and the park?

This month (June 2023) I will begin to review the names which have been added to the "[[List of Puerto Ricans]]". Those unknown names which have been added without following the proper rules of inclusion will be removed. As stated by the "rules of inclusion" all the names added must be of notable people and must have a reliable source which states their Puerto Rican heritage. Any name that is removed can be added once more only if a proper source is included which indicates that said person is in fact notable and Puerto Rican or of Puerto Rican heritage. == User script to detect unreliable sources ==

{{Main|User:Headbomb/unreliable}}
I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to [[WP:URS|unreliable sources]] and [[predatory journal]]s. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the [[Wikipedia:User scripts/Most imported scripts|39th most imported script on Wikipedia]]. The idea is that it takes something like
*John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14. (<code><nowiki>John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.</nowiki></code>)
and turns it into something like
* John Smith "{{highlight|[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]|pink}}" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{tl|cite web}}, {{tl|cite journal}} and {{tl|doi}}.

The script is mostly based on [[WP:RSPSOURCES]], [[WP:NPPSG]] and [[WP:CITEWATCH]] and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Do note that this is '''not a script to be mindlessly used''', and several caveats apply. Details and instructions are available at [[User:Headbomb/unreliable]]. Questions, comments and requests can be made at [[User talk:Headbomb/unreliable]].

How to subcategorize Puerto Rico articles

I have been working on standardizing the subcategories under which Puerto Rico-related articles appear. There was a mix of ways under which Puerto Rico articles were being subcategorized, yet the natural thing to do seemed to be to have a one common systematic way of subcategorizing them. For example, in categories about museums, the subcategory “Category:Museums in Puerto Rico” could had been subcategorized under (1) Category:Museums in insular areas of the United States, (2) Category:Museums in the United States by location, or (3) Category:Museums in the United States by dependent territory, (and perhaps a few others). I chose the first format (“XYZ in insular areas of the United States”). It seemed natural: most subcategories of Puerto Rico articles already appeared to be using that format. What do you all think? Mercy11 (talk) 01:14, 13 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Since Puerto Rico is an unincorporated territory of the United States, I agree with the use of the insular area category since it is a fairly common term in the United States to refer to its dependent territories. Yarfpr (talk) 01:30, 14 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It was time someone did this. Thanks Mercy11. "Category:... in insular areas of the United States" is a good bucket and it fills up with other US insular areas, as well. i.e. USVI, and the other less populated ones - the ones no one seems to speak of hardly. Let me know if you need help with this project and I could try to make some time but I've just been so busy with life. Thanks again. --The Eloquent Peasant (talk) 15:04, 17 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Mercy11: The "Foo by / of Insular Areas ..." is a good way to categorize but I saw it's being discussed over here. I added my .02 with a WP:RS showing that the US Dept of Interior defines An Insular Area of the United States as "A jurisdiction that is neither a part of one of the several States nor a Federal district. This is the current generic term to refer to any commonwealth, freely associated state, possession or territory or Territory and from July 18, 1947, until October 1, 1994, the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands. Unmodified, it may refer not only to a jurisdiction which is under United States sovereignty but also to one which is not, i.e., a freely associated state or, 1947-94, the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands or one of the districts of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands."
Setting up the categories like this would contain all things that are not US states or Washington DC and I think that is the correct way to do it. [1] The Eloquent Peasant (talk) 13:36, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Even if you only did maybe 10 or 15 mins a week so long as you did it systematically and noted on the talk page which sections you had fixed someone else would be able to take over if you ran out of time. If it takes more than a few mins to verify that a sentence reflects a source then just delete the sentence in my opinion (or move whole dubious sections to the talk page).
Because the subject of the article will still be important in 5 or 10 years time or whenever it is got up to good standard and so becomes eligible for DYK again. Chidgk1 (talk) 06:21, 30 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Crime notability

I was digging around about violent street gangs and the FBI, and found news about an indictment of a group that operated in and around Manati.[1] My question is broad- about including a crime section in some of the (place) articles. It is WP:NEWS but at some point the topic may be notable enough, right? A lot of WP city articles include a Crime section. Just sharing my thoughts.

Parque Cristóbal Colón

Age old question? The location of Parque Cristobal Colon. [:File:Aguadilla - Parque de Colon 01.jpg]

It's said to be in Aguadilla, but I think the map shows it's in Aguada.

I did not know and argued that it's not in Aguada. After, I thought the place should be listed in both Aguada and Aguadilla. The closer removed the images of the park and the Banyan Tree from the Aguada category in Commons.

Again, according to the map, the park, the tree house, and the monument seem to be in Aguada yet it's always advertised as being in Aguadilla.

Why? What? How? When?

Is it because there is no "road" from Aguada that leads there. It's actually a road from Aguadilla that leads to the area with the tree house and the park?

I wonder if anyone else has any thoughts on this.

Should the park be listed under both Aguada and Aguadilla? The Eloquent Peasant (talk) 12:18, 21 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

>>> Here you have more information <<<
In short, the Río Culebrinas changed its course closer to barrio Espinar, creating the Caño Madre Vieja around the park. That is to say, previously the river flowed into that area, which is the one that serves as the boundary between both municipalities.
I hope I have helped a little with the situation. Yarfpr (talk) 19:29, 12 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Madame LaQueer

I am interested in nominating Madame LaQueer for Good article status. Inviting project members to review and help identify any Spanish-language sources that might be helpful for expanding further. Thanks! ---Another Believer (Talk) 20:27, 11 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Another Believer: Thank you. I've never had time. I've never participated in a QA review. Maybe I should start one day.... Have a good year. Cheers! --The Eloquent Peasant (talk) 20:37, 12 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Ponce

Finished updating the escudo and bandera around the Wiki ecosystem. The Eloquent Peasant (talk) 12:26, 20 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

That's great! Thank you. Yarfpr (talk) 23:50, 20 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Lastra is notable as Secretary of State of Puerto Rico, along with other positions, but the draft was recently declined due to sourcing issues. It was created back in February and the creator has not made any edits since so not hopeful they will improve it. I added the promising draft tag so it will not deleted for at least a year if anyone is interested in working on it. S0091 (talk) 17:09, 1 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Notice

This month (June 2023) I will begin to review the names which have been added to the "List of Puerto Ricans". Speedy move opposed

Please note that a request for hundreds of categories to be moved was done via Speedy move request. Therefore the request did not show up on the Project's article alerts. The move was begun, then halted because it was opposed. Please read here. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Speedy#Opposed_requests

In summary it has to do with renaming categories that say ...states in the United States to ...states or territories in the United States.

It is my understanding that the US territories are not in the US. WP:PRUS.

Please consider adding it to your watchlist, and participating if when it becomes a real discussion.

Happy Holidays. The Eloquent Peasant (talk) 16:19, 28 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
