We Must (Serbian Cyrillic: Морамо, romanizedMoramo; stylized as Moramo,) is a green political coalition in Serbia.

Initially formed in November 2021, when Together for Serbia (ZZS), Do not let Belgrade drown (NDB) and Ecological Uprising (EU) signed an agreement to participate in the 2022 general election under a joint list, it was formalized as a coalition in January 2022. Its representatives had previously played a major role during the 2021–2022 environmental protests. The coalition won 4.7% of the popular vote and managed to cross the electoral threshold, while its presidential candidate, Biljana Stojković, won 3.3% of the popular vote. Following the election, a part of the coalition had transformed into the Together political party in early June. We Must describes itself as a "green-left" coalition and it cooperates with the European Green Party.

History

Background and formation

During the early beginning of environmental protests in January 2021, Aleksandar Jovanović Ćuta, a member of the "Defend the Rivers of Stara Planina" organization, gained popularity due to his involvement in protests and his environmental activism.[1][2] In March 2021, he announced that he would organize an "Ecological Uprising" protest in April,[3] in which 60 environmental organizations ended up participating in.[4] The protests later continued in September,[5] with more involvement from the Together for Serbia (ZZS), and the Do not let Belgrade drown (NDB) movement.[6] Their influence grew through November and December, when the number of demonstrators became much larger.[7][8] Although the number of demonstrators in 2022 became smaller,[9] the protests were regularly organized up until 15 February.[10]

In June 2021, Nebojša Zelenović, leader of Together for Serbia, announced the formation of "Action", a political group built around 28 environmental civic groups that support the "Green Agreement of Serbia".[11] Later during the environmental protests in November, the leader of NDB, Dobrica Veselinović, Zelenović and Ćuta had announced the formation of a joint list for the 2022 general election and Belgrade City Assembly election.[12][13] The media dubbed the coalition as "Green-Left bloc" (Serbian Cyrillic: Зелено-леви блок, romanizedZeleno-levi blok).[12][14] The formation was finalized on 19 January, when it was announced to the public that the coalition had been officially formed.[15][16] During the presentation, it was announced that Zelenović would be the representative of the parliamentary list, Veselinović would head the Belgrade City Assembly list, while Ćuta agreed to be the first MP candidate on the parliamentary list.[17] They had also stated its support for the common opposition candidate for the presidential election. Zelenović stated that "the main organizations that are a part of the "We Must" coalition had applied for the membership in the European Greens, and that it all started with the Spanish Podemos".[17]

2022 election and aftermath

The coalition began its campaign in Gornje Nedeljice, and on 27 February, they had announced Biljana Stojković as their presidential candidate.[18][19] It campaigned in cities across Serbia, while its last rally was held in Kragujevac.[20][21] The Slovenian political party The Left had stated its support for the coalition in late March.[22] The coalition ended up winning 4.7% of the popular vote and 13 seats in the National Assembly, while its presidential candidate Stojković won 3.3% of the popular vote.[23] In May, Ćuta stated that, together with Zelenović, he would hold a founding assembly on 11 June in order to reveal the creation of a joint political party.[24][25][26] It was also speculated that the Democratic Party (DS) would join the coalition in May.[27][28] The party was presented to the public as Together (Z), and it was announced that the party would have three co-leaders.[29][30]

During the same period, a conflict emerged due to the dispute over the coalition's name. NDB had claimed the name as its intellectual property, although it later withdrew the request that it had sent to the Intellectual Property Office (ZIS).[31] Radomir Lazović had argued that the intellectual property would be the property of the coalition, and not NDB.[32] During an interview in June, Zelenović had stated that the coalition still exists.[31] In late June, Together held a meeting with Party of Freedom and Justice (SSP) and Zdravko Ponoš; NDB did not participate.[33] We Must split into two parliamentary groups during the first constitutive session of the thirteenth convocation of the National Assembly on 1 August. Zelenović stated that the Together parliamentary group would send an initiative regarding the ban of lithium and boron. NDB had stated that they would continue their cooperation with Together within the We Must coalition, while they would also serve in opposition and decline any cooperation with the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) and Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS).[34]

Ideology and position

The coalition was formed by the centre-left Together for Serbia, green Do not let Belgrade drown and the environmentalist "Ecological Uprising" movement; they emphasize their support towards green politics.[35] During their founding conference, they had stated that they would represent green-left values,[15][36] and that some of their main goals would include the abandonment of Rio Tinto's plan to excavate lithium in Serbia, and to defeat the Serbian Progressive Party in the 2022 election.[16][37] Zelenović had also stated that "it is necessary for Serbia to join the green transformations, otherwise it would remain a place for dirty technologies, cheap labor and colonization", and that Serbia should be more orientated towards the European Union and the Western world.[38][39] Its leaders had stated support for "social justice and basic needs for every citizen", and had also commented that "we must overcome the authoritarian regimes in the Balkans".[40] Moramo had condemned the request of Dveri to cancel EuroPride in July 2022.[41]

They were also described as "the new faces of the opposition's left-wing",[42] and were compared to the Croatian We can! party and the Montenegrin United Reform Action.[17][43] The coalition cooperates with the European Greens,[44] while it had also received support from the European Left during the 2022 electoral campaign.[45] Political parties such as the German Die Linke, Danish Red–Green Alliance and Slovenian Levica had also voiced its support for We Must.[46]

Members

The coalition is also made up of the Local Front and the Forum of Romani People of Serbia.[15]
