Faking It is an American single-camera romantic comedy[1] series that premiered on MTV on April 22, 2014.[2] The series was created by Dana Min Goodman and Julia Wolov. Carter Covington developed the series and serves as the executive producer.[3] An eight-episode first season was ordered by MTV in October 2013. [4] MTV announced a ten episode second season set to premiere on September 23, 2014.[5][6] In August 2014, the show won a Teen Choice Award for "Choice TV Breakout Show".

Synopsis

At Hester High School in the suburbs of Austin, being different is popular. After many failed attempts to stand out Karma Ashcroft (Katie Stevens) and her best friend Amy Raudenfeld (Rita Volk), are invited to a house party hosted by Shane Harvey (Michael Willett), as the latter is under the impression that the girls are a lesbian couple.

At the party they are subsequently outed as the school's first lesbian couple and unwillingly nominated for homecoming Queens. Continuing the charade as their popularity soars, Karma attracts the attention of the popular and handsome Liam Booker (Gregg Sulkin), while Amy becomes aware of her growing romantic feelings for Karma.

  • Rita Volk as Amy Raudenfeld, a sophomore at Hester High School. Karma's best friend, who is very cynical, she goes with Karma's plan of faking being lesbians. However, it seems as she might not actually be "Faking it" and doing so is, in fact, actually making her realize she may have a crush on her best friend.[7]
  • Katie Stevens as Karma Ashcroft, an optimistic high school sophomore who would go to any length to achieve popularity. Has a secret affair with Liam Booker, even though she is in a (fake) lesbian relationship with her best friend, Amy.[7]
  • Gregg Sulkin as Liam Booker, Shane's best friend, a mysterious and sexy artist who is secretly involved with Karma.[7]
  • Bailey De Young as Lauren Cooper, the new girl in school who is furious with the unordinary school system. She's Amy's step-sister and is intersex.[7][8]
  • Michael Willett as Shane Harvey, the most popular boy in school, who is openly gay. He outs Karma and Amy as lesbians.[7] Shane later becomes Amy's confidant concerning her growing feelings towards Karma.

Best friends Karma and Amy go to a school where being different makes you popular, Karma has tried many things to get in with the cool crowd but nothing has made them stand out. Until Shane, a popular kid in school, mistakes them for lesbians and invites them to his party, where he outs them as lesbians and nominates them for prom queens. Amy and Karma decide to go along with the ruse to make themselves popular, but Amy's sister Lauren is infuriated by this because she and her boyfriend were nominated for homecoming king and queen, and she threatens to tell the whole school that Amy and Karma are faking it, but an impromtu make out session convinces the school otherwise.

Lauren threatens to out Amy to her conservative mother as Hester High gets ready for their first-ever same-sex Homecoming Dance. Liam and Karma continue their affair but as soon as Liam tells her that he always wanted to have sex with a lesbian, she 'breaks up' with him. Amy asks Shane to be her fake date for Homecoming Dance so her mother won't know she's 'lesbian'. Amy's mom however, is the reporter of the first-ever Homecoming queens. Amy tries to stop her but in the end she comes out of the closet. Her mom isn't quite happy about that.

At Farrah and Bruce's wedding, Karma hides her relationship with Liam from Amy while Amy struggles with whether or not to confess her true feelings for Karma. Throughout the night Amy shows her feelings for Karma and at the end of the night she finally tells Karma the truth about how she feels but, Karma doesn't feel the same way. At the same time, Shane tells Liam the truth about Karma and Amy's relationship. Afterwards, Karma tells Liam that her and Amy's relationship is finally over, but Liam confronts Karma with the truth and she is forced to finally come clean and, Liam ends his relationship with Karma. Later the same night, Liam and Amy are drunk and are shown having sex in the last scene.
