Question from AnDon Timer (17:25, 30 May 2024)[edit]

I’m a music artist and i want to upload my bio to Google --AnDon Timer (talk) 17:25, 30 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@AnDon Timer: Wikipedia is not a soapbox for your promotion. Wikipedia is also not Google. Please do not attempt to use this site to promote yourself. Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 17:34, 30 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

But people add their net worth using Wikipedia, i just want to upload a bio and about myself AnDon Timer (talk) 18:11, 30 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

People do not add their net worth using Wikipedia. Wikipedia has reliably sourced artices on notable individuals that can come up in Google searches. There is no function through Wikipedia to get Google to show your net worth and this is not what Wikipedia is for. If this is all you are hoping for then please look elsewhere. Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 18:14, 30 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

But you mean i can write an article about myself or another person using Wikipedia? AnDon Timer (talk) 18:19, 30 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

If you are looking to write an article on Wikipedia, see this page which takes you through writing your first article. Please be aware that all Wikipedia articles should be neutral, and you obviously have a conflict of interest if you write about yourself. Wikipedia strongly discourages anyone from attempting to write an autobiography. As I mentioned before, Wikipedia does not exist for you to promote yourself or your brand. Thanks, Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 18:23, 30 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from McCal Media (18:38, 30 May 2024)[edit]

What are some key insights to know or learn when first editing and working on articles? --McCal Media (talk) 18:38, 30 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@McCal Media: Before we go any further I have to request that you change your username. It currently only contains the name of what I assume is a company which is not allowed per the Wikipedia username policy. Please request a username change here; for people related to businesses the most common format to do this in is "[Your name] at McCal Media" or similar. You must also disclose your conflict of interest on your userpage and if you are being paid for your contributions here.
That said, the main points I think are useful to know are that every addition on Wikipedia needs to be several things:
  • Verifiable; this means that you provide a citation for any information you add that says where you got it from
  • Reliably sourced; any sources you do use for citations must be reliable (e.g. published, independent material)
  • Notable; the topic of every Wikipedia article needs to be notable for that article to not be deleted; this means it passes the general notability guidelines
There's a lot more that could be talked about. Your best placed to go when getting started is here. Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 18:48, 30 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Peri Otherly (03:32, 31 May 2024)[edit]

Hello Wiki Mentor: regarding my recent [TH May 30, 2024] minor edit of the WIKI bio of Oney Judge, i.e., from 'slave' to 'an enslaved woman', should I edit all subsequent references thoughout the article from 'slave' to 'enslaved person/s'? THX Peri --Peri Otherly (talk) 03:32, 31 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Peri Otherly: You certainly could for the sake of consistency. If you're worried about doing it you could ask this question on the article talk page, where I see another user has also mentioned the use of "enslaved". Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 12:28, 31 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Shashankkala (13:17, 1 June 2024)[edit]

My articles get declined with the reason that i did not cite the relevant or correct sources(even though i added many). even when i have seen many other articles (stubs) which are alive with no citations or sources at all. How? --Shashankkala (talk) 13:17, 1 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Shashankkala: Each Wikipedia article is judged independently for its worth. You are correct that there are poor articles in main space, but this does not mean other equally poor articles should be accepted. In the case of Draft:Shashank Kala I am not seeing sources that really assist with WP:GNG, such as sustained, reliable coverage of the individual. The citations provided are minor. Considering that there are zero results when searching the name in Google News I think it unlikely that you will be able to demonstrate the notability required for the article to be accepted. I also note that from your username you are attempting to write an autobiography, which is strongly discouraged as you have an unavoidable conflict of interest. Question from Diksha1805 (18:01, 2 June 2024)[edit]

Hey, how can I write a new article on Wikipedia? --Diksha1805 (talk) 18:01, 2 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Diksha1805: Hi! I see you've asked two questions, I will answer them both here. This page is the best place to start to learn how to write an article. It will take you through the basics you need to understand (such as that articles and article subjects need to be notable, neutral, and supported by reliable sources) and explains how to use articles for creation. AfC is the process new editors go through when they produce an article for Wikipedia. It allows a more experienced editor to review the article first to make sure that it is right for the site, and provide feedback.
If you believe that an article needs page protection of any variety, then you need to request that protection here. Make sure you have a read of the policy for page protection before you make the request, and be prepared to justify why the page needs protecting. Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 16:57, 7 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Diksha1805 (18:15, 2 June 2024)[edit]

Hey, can you please tell me how to add protection to a Wikipedia page? --Diksha1805 (talk) 18:15, 2 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Shashankkala (04:27, 3 June 2024)[edit]

i accept that Draft:Shashank Kala was not worthy enougth for wikipedia, the problem im having is with draft:seela , it os declined twice . can you evaluate? --Shashankkala (talk) 04:27, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Shashankkala: I echo what the article reviewer has written, that you need more and better sources. Right now your sources show that the village exists, but not why it is notable. You need to provide sources that have significant coverage of the village, while right now you have sources that either briefly mention the village or are directories. Simply, proving that a place exists is not enough to justify a Wikipedia article. You need to demonstrate through your sources and your writing that the topic is notable. Please also make sure that you are citing all the information you use; the first paragraph of your draft includes uncited information not repeated elsewhere. Question from Alaminislamsiam (14:36, 7 June 2024)[edit]

i want to write myself in Wikipedia --Alaminislamsiam (talk) 14:36, 7 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Alaminislamsiam: Hello, welcome to Wikipedia! We encourage users not to write autobiographies, or any other article relating to themself. You have a strong conflict of interest and bias that will most likely negate any work you attempt. All article subjects on Wikipedia must be notable; if you are notable then rest assured that somebody else will write the article at some point. Please do not attempt to do so yourself. Thanks, Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 16:51, 7 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Going to steal this answer for when I get this question in the future; good luck on the RFA! Panini! 🥪 16:09, 8 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Your revert of the Canon S stub[edit]

Hi,

Just some constructive feedback: I don’t think you acted in the best possible way by just reverting that stub back to a redirect. You could have, for example, put a “citation needed” or “Unreferenced” tag and then given a reasonable amount of time for this to be remedied.

Additionally, your explanation for the revert, that the “redirect does make sense”, seems to indicate insufficient familiarity with the subject matter, since “Canon S” is the exact name Canon itself retroactively gave that model (which was a key milestone in the company’s early history) when they released its successor, the S II. Using the “Canon S” article title to redirect to the historically insignificant PowerShot S series, which is not typically called a “Canon S”, seems wildly off-target to me.

Thanks for listening!

Regards, — tooki (talk) 20:41, 10 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I reverted the change because it had been over an hour and no citation had been added to what was a new one line stub. The redirect did make sense in that "Canon S" is a shortened version of "Canon PowerShot S" which was the target. I am a layman, not a camera expert. I see you've added a citation now, thank you. I look forward to seeing how you expand the article! Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 20:46, 10 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

A baton for you![edit]

An AI-generated image of a Coquerel's sifaka lemur running around a dilapidated racetrack holding a relay baton. The new admin baton
Didn't get much time with the new admin baton, which is a shame, as being the current holder doubles your admin salary (it's a signing bonus, though they don't tell it to you until after you RfA). So I held onto it a bit longer than normal after a successful RfA.

In all seriousness, congrats on your successful RfA :) I'm very glad to see you become an admin and hope you can pass off the baton soon as well. Elli (talk | contribs) 20:53, 15 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Monkeywire (20:38, 20 June 2024)[edit]

Hello, the page for Ngwo Pine forest doesn't have the "F" capitalized but "F" is part of the title, so it probably should be. I don't know how to change that.

Second: The page for Golden Gate Biosphere Network includes a sentence that is vague, has no citation, and seems to be written by someone close to the group. I suggested on TALK that the sentence be striked rather than doing it myself. Is that correct protocol? --Monkeywire (talk) 20:38, 20 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Monkeywire: Hi, welcome to Wikipedia! Discussing changes to an article on the talk page is always a good place to start. If you don't get any responses and feel like your edit is justifiable, go ahead and be bold! Re Ngwo Pine forest I suggest you do similarly and first discuss on the talk page. If change was necessary it would be completed via a page move. Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 13:58, 24 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Alt account[edit]

Hey,

Congrats on getting the mop! :)

Yesterday you blocked ItsCheck the 2nd. Don't know if you noticed, but per User:ItsCheck the 2nd, they're an alt of ItsCheck, who continues to edit. Just so you're aware.

Cheers, -- DoubleGrazing (talk) 10:30, 24 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@DoubleGrazing: Hi, thank you! I blocked the aforementioned account for impersonation because, per this report, that was not actually them. Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 13:53, 24 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Virtuous Retail Editing (06:00, 27 June 2024)[edit]

Hey, wanted to get my page published , I have written the article on my sandbox, can you guide me how to go about it ? --Virtuous Retail Editing (talk) 06:00, 27 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Congrats[edit]

I see you've been handed the mop. I'm sorry I missed your RFA but it doesn't look like you were relying on my support in any event. :) Now you're a busy admin, I'm wondering when you might have time to finish your review of HMS Glenmore? Best wishes and congratulations. --Ykraps (talk) 06:55, 27 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Ykraps: My apologies for not getting back to the review sooner. I have every intent to keep actively writing and reviewing content! Glenmore is still on my radar and I will get back to it ASAP. Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 09:28, 27 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Umar Abd al-Rahmaan Abd al-Rashid (04:02, 29 June 2024)[edit]

As-salamu alaykum, my name is Umar Abd al-Rahmaan Muhammad Abd al-Rashid, you can call me Umar.

Wikipedia said that you have been assigned as my mentor on here, I'm so sorry but I have no idea how any of Wikipedia works. Is there a way I can set up my profile?

Thank you, Maa Salam. --Umar Abd al-Rahmaan Abd al-Rashid (talk) 04:02, 29 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Umar Abd al-Rahmaan Abd al-Rashid: Hi, welcome to Wikipedia! This page provides an overview of tutorials and help pages. For a general introduction you might find this useful, or if you want something a little different The Wikipedia Adventure might be your thing.
If you would like to write a little about yourself and what you want to edit on Wikipedia, you can use your userpage for that. Please be aware that you should not attempt to write your autobiography. If that is what you meant by "set up my profile" please do not do it. You have an unavoidable conflict of interest in any such writing; if you are notable rest assured that somebody else will write it.
