VDM Publishing House, Ltd. (also known as VDM Publishing or Verlag Dr. Mueller Publishing or LAP Lambert Academic Publishing or SVH Südwestdeutsche Verlag für Hochschulschriften or VCE Verlag Classic Edition or FastBook Publishing or Saarbücker Verlag für Rechtswissenschaften or MoreBooks! Publishing GmbH) is a print on demand book publishing company based in Germany, in Mauritius, and in Moldova.[2][3][5] It was founded in 2002 by Dr. Wolfgang Philipp Müller.[2] In 2007, it started cooperations with Lightning Source,[6] Amazon.com,[7] Amazon.co.uk and the German company Books on Demand.[8]

VDM Publishing specializes in German and English dissertations and theses. Its services are free to authors. Unlike most print on demand publishing companies, it employs a team of acquisition editors that integrates electronic spamming into its methods to approach potential authors.[9][10][11] It does not edit or proofread manuscripts.[12]

Criticism and response

The American writer Victoria Strauss has characterized VDM Publishing as “an academic author mill”.[13] VDM has also been criticized for its use of electronic spamming to approach potential authors.[9][10]

In an interview published on the VDM website, Wolfgang Philipp Müller, CEO, defended the use of these methods: “In public, VDM is sometimes made out to be ‘aggressive’. What do you think about it?” Müller: “Well, that's comprehensible. We make an approach to our authors offering to publish their work. That's not good manners in the distinguished publishing sector. On the other hand, our customers are totally satisfied with our publishing service.”[14]

Alphascript Publishing and Betascript Publishing

Alphascript Publishing (created in April 2009)[15] and Betascript Publishing (created in January 2010) are trademarks of VDM Publishing House, and are used to sell Wikipedia articles as commercial print books: “with the Wikipedia-texts at free disposal we create books on interesting topics.”[16][17][18]
