Werewolf by Night is an upcoming American television special directed by Michael Giacchino for the streaming service Disney+, based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name. It is intended to be the first television special in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), sharing continuity with the films of the franchise. The special is produced by Marvel Studios.

Gael García Bernal stars in the special as Jack Russell / Werewolf by Night, along with Laura Donnelly and Harriet Sansom Harris. Development of the special had begun by August 2021, with Bernal cast that November. Giacchino joined by March 2022, ahead of the start of filming later that month in Atlanta, Georgia, which concluded by late April.

The special is scheduled to be released on Disney+ on October 7, 2022, as part of Phase Four of the MCU.

Premise

A secret group of monster hunters gather at Bloodstone Castle following the death of their leader and engage in a mysterious and deadly competition for a powerful relic, which will bring them face to face with a dangerous monster.[1]

Cast and characters

Additionally, Jaycob Maya, Eugenie Bondurant,[5] and Kirk Thatcher have been cast in undisclosed roles.[6] Also slated to appear in the special are Ulysses Bloodstone, Elsa's monster-hunting father who has become an animated, zombie-like being,[7][8] the creature Man-Thing, and members of the Time Variance Authority.[8]

Production

Development

The Marvel Comics character Werewolf by Night was planned for a feature film by May 2001, to be licensed from Marvel Studios and distributed by Dimension Films,[9] with a story developed by Marvel Studios' Avi Arad, Kevin Feige, and Ari Arad. Hans Rodionoff was writing the script by June 2002 following several drafts by John Fasano, and Crystal Sky Pictures was set to co-produce the film.[10] By February 2003, Robert Nelson Jacobs was writing the film, with Steven Paul and Patrick Ewald producing for Crystal Sky alongside Brad Weston and Nick Phillips for Dimension Films.[11] In early March 2004, the project was advertised at the American Film Market for distribution,[12] and by November, Crystal Sky was preparing to shoot the film in the United Kingdom over the following six months.[13] The next November, Crystal Sky was planning to announce a director and cast shortly, and start filming in 2006, but this did not materialize.[14] Marvel Studios had intended to use the character in a Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) project as early as February 2019, when Kevin Smith was informed that he could not feature Werewolf by Night in his then-planned Marvel Television animated Howard the Duck series due to Marvel Studios' own plans.[15]

By August 2021, Marvel Studios was developing a Halloween-themed television special for Disney+ that was reportedly centered on Werewolf by Night, though it was unclear if either the Jack Russell or Jake Gomez versions of the character would be featured.[16] Earlier in the month, Production Weekly had included a Werewolf by Night project in their report of upcoming projects in development.[17] Michael Giacchino was hired to direct the one-hour special by March 2022, after previously scoring several MCU films,[18] and having been rumored to be directing a Marvel Disney+ project since December 2021;[19] Giacchino previously directed the 2018 short film Monster Challenge and the animated Star Trek: Short Treks episode "Ephraim and Dot" (2019).[20] The project was being referred to by some as Werewolf by Night, although The Hollywood Reporter noted that it could have a different title.[18] Giacchino confirmed he was directing the special in June 2022, calling it an enjoyable but "challenging process".[21]

In September 2022, Marvel Studios officially revealed the special, titled Werewolf by Night.[22] Giacchino said the special was inspired by horror films from the 1930s and 1940s, comparing it to the film Poltergeist (1982), in that it would have "the right level of scares".[3] The special was classified by Disney+ as a comedy,[1] and was described as Marvel Studios' "first-ever special presentation",[23][24] dubbed "A Marvel Studios Special Presentation", featuring a multicolored intro with bongo drum music, reminiscent of the CBS Special Presentation theme featured before animated holiday specials of the 1980s and 1990s.[8] Feige, Louis D'Esposito, and Victoria Alonso executive produce.[22]

Casting

A search for a male Latino actor in their 30s to portray the lead role in the special was underway by the end of August 2021,[16] with Gael García Bernal cast in the role in November.[25] In January 2022, Laura Donnelly was cast in an undisclosed role.[26] In September, Bernal and Donnelly were respectively confirmed as Jack Russell / Werewolf by Night and Elsa Bloodstone,[2][3] along with the casting of Harriet Sansom Harris as Verusa,[4] and the additions of Jaycob Maya, Eugenie Bondurant,[5] and Kirk Thatcher in undisclosed roles.[6]

Design

Maya Shimoguchi served as the production designer, after previously working on the Marvel Studios series Hawkeye, and on the MCU film Thor (2011) as the supervising art director.[27]

Filming

Filming was expected to begin in late March 2022 at Trilith Studios in Atlanta, Georgia,[18][28] under the working title Buzzcut,[29][17][28] and had begun by March 29.[30] Zoë White serves as cinematographer.[31] Filming was previously expected to begin in February to last for a month until March 2022.[32][29] Filming wrapped by late April 2022.[33]

Music

Giacchino also scored the special in addition to directing.[34]

Marketing

The teaser trailer and poster for the special were revealed at the 2022 D23 Expo.[22][23] The trailer was noted for appearing in black and white and having other film elements resembling classic horror films.[5][8][6]

Release

Werewolf by Night is scheduled to be released on Disney+ on October 7, 2022.[22] It will be part of Phase Four of the MCU.[35]
